Mmm... Robert Jordan, author of the Wheel of Time series, passed away yesterday. That sucks. He had one book left to go in the series (which I've been reading since the 90s). I met him two years ago while he was doing a signing tour for the 11th book, and he was a really nice guy. I always feel nervous meeting authors. I'm pretty sure I sounded like an idiot when I met George R R Martin ("D'uh, I like your books"), and I know I made a fool out of myself with Neil Gaiman ("I'm King of the Fish People!". But, undoubtedly, he hears a lot of weird things from the crazies who usually comprise his fanbase). So, I decided to think of something nice and normal to say to Robert Jordan. I went with "Thank you for writing your books." He looked at me, like, really seemed to notice me in a way the other two didn't. Course, maybe he thought I was crazy, too.

Anyway, I guess he explained the conclusion in detail to his wife and friend shortly before he died. He probably suspected it was coming. They're trying to decide what and how to release it now.

I am taking an intro to spanish class with one of my friends. However, to do this, I had to give up pottery for a quarter. Well, I could've changed the dates of either class and made it work, but I honestly kinda wanted to take a break from it. I also didn't want to have 3 nights a week taken up by classes. I've been meaning to take a language class for as long as I've been down here, and Spanish is a good enough one considering its prevalence in DC and the fact that I'm going to be going there in March-ish.

So, anyway, I ended up with one unfired pot, three unglazed pots, and a couple other ceramics to hold on to until I take the class again. Here are some of my final finished items.

Mugs. I really like how my red-white one came out. If I had continued, I would probably continue that pattern, but with a different base color.

Different Angle of the Mugs.

This is my best bowl, ever.

Pity it has those random white spots. Probably some mistake / accident while I was glazing that I didn't notice. It doesn't rest completely flat. However, the weight feels correct to me (some things appear small, but then you pick them up and are surprised by the weight. Extensive trimming fixed this problem). The color wasn't what I wanted, but I find that I like it. A single glaze was used. This bowl was reduction fired, so the color distortion is a result of gas movement and availability in the kiln. As you can see, in one side gas was more plentiful than on the other side.
