Heroism

I have been letting my mind wander whilst viewing YouTube music videos (mostly classical and Vocaloid videos - sometimes both) and, as it is wont to do in such situations, I've gotten a theme stuck in my head. Not a musical one, but a literary or real life one.

What is heroism?

If you ask 10 different people what heroism is, you would likely get 10 different answers, similar in tone, but none having the exact same requirements. Everyone has a defined image in their minds of what a hero is, but as with everything that involves individual perceptions, this image is different for everyone.

And yet, most people recognize a hero when they see one. This person is recognized for their actions by everyone, no matter what ethnic, socioeconomic, national, religious or cultural background. They stand acclaimed for these actions, actions which everyone recognizes as being good, right, and proper.

And yet, if everyone knows the good, right, and proper actions, why are these things to be acclaimed, rather than practiced every day?

To me, a hero is simply someone who sees something that needs doing, and does it. No matter the situation - they recognize the call to action, whatever that action may be, and heed it. A hero is someone who does what is right.

Food for thought as I shut it down for the evening.
