[ History ] :
ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS A BEAUTIFUL PRINCESS THAT LIVED WITH HER GRANDMOTHER IN A RADIANT GARDEN. She had lots of flowers to play with and there were sunshine and rainbows everywhere. One time some creepy crawly things came after her, but that was okay because a lady with blue hair and shining armor jumped in to save her. The Lady Knight gave the princess a protective charm so that she would always be safe, just in case anything happened again, and the little princess smiled and went off with her grandmother to live happily ever after.
Until one day when the Princess's world was completely destroyed.
The Princess's entire world shattered. The charm the Knight had given her protected her, but it did so in a very strange way-- it sent the young princess across space to an entirely different world, far away from the destruction. It saved her life by sending her away, but during that harsh travel, the Princess lost all memory of her previous life.
And so young Kairi woke up washed ashore on a strange beach, all alone and with no memory of who she was.
Being as she was still secretly a princess, however, the rules of the universe allowed that she was still able to lead a fairly charmed life. She didn't sing to birds or have woodland creatures make her clothing or anything, but she did get adopted by the Mayor. And, most importantly, she made new friends.
Two in particular. They were as opposite as night and day, with one quiet, smart and aloof, while the other was sunny, naiive, and excitable-- and yet she became as close with them as three people can ever become. They were the Three Musketeers, adventuring and exploring around their island, and with their help Kairi was never bothered by the fact that she could not remember her past. She was incredibly happy where she was, and did not want to change a thing.
And then one day, the three of them got the idea to build a raft.
It's funny, how such a small thing can change everything.
Kairi embraced this project wholeheartedly, working to organize everything they would need and how to build it. It seemed like a fun new game, and when the raft was complete they could go and explore even farther places, just the three of them. Kairi took it upon herself to make sure Sora stayed on task and didn't fall asleep too much, and to also work with Riku-- but Riku seemed strangely intent on this new project, a bit more serious and determined than she was expecting. The closer their raft came to completion, the more Kairi felt something foreboding, specifically about Riku-- this was both confusing and scary for her, because she did not understand why she felt something bad was going to happen.
And then, Something Bad did happen. Destiny Islands was attacked the same way her previous world had been. A door was opened, and the world was swallowed by darkness.
This probably would have been more terrifying for her, except that Kairi spent most of the first game as a tag-along inside Sora's heart, while her body was carried around as a lifeless doll. See, when the Islands were attacked, Kairi's heart got separated from her body-- but because she was a Princess of Heart, she did not become a heartless, as was supposed to happen. Instead, her body stayed whole, waiting for her heart to return-- and meanwhile Sora accidentally caught her heart when it flew by him and unknowingly carried it around with him while he went keyblading through many different worlds, looking for his friends.
To make a long story short, Sora finds his friends, Kairi gets her heart back and the good guys win-- kind of. Riku ends up sacrificing himself to save them, Sora has to leave Kairi behind so he can close the door to Kingdom Hearts, and the Three Musketeers become separated once more. Kairi ends up back on the rebuilt Destiny Islands, with little knowledge of what happened to her friends or if Sora and Riku are still all right.
She waits over a year for them to come back to her.
In that year, her life more or less returns to normal. She goes back to school, she talks to her old friends, she does all the things every young teenage girl is supposed to do. But it always feels surreal. Sora and Riku had become such a huge part of her heart that she cannot stop thinking about them. Even when a spell is cast that makes her forget their names, Kairi still remembers them-- in her heart, they can never be replaced. She makes a quiet vow not to return to the small island where they used to play until she can remember the boy who used to make her smile. She writes him a letter and sends it off in a bottle, praying that the tides will take it to him.
Eventually, she is tired of waiting. They haven't come home, and she is worried. She wants to be there and find out what has happened to them.
An unfriendly man with fiery red hair appears next to her on the beach one day, with an abrupt promise to take Kairi straight to her friends.
She doesn't trust him, however, and decides to run after a strange dog, straight into a swirling black hole that has just appeared, rather than go with him. Logic, she has it. However, Being as she is still a princess and therefore a Damsel in Distress, she doesn't avoid kidnapping for very long. The red-haired man shows up again and drags her off, and then she is kidnapped away from him by a scary, blue-haired man named Saix. Double kidnapping. Her life is hard.
He throws her in a cell, where she then yells at him through the bars, demanding to know what he intends to do with her. Saix tells her she is simply bait, or rather a tool to be used against Sora.
Kairi does not like this new bit of information very much. If Sora is in danger because of her...
She is rescued shortly thereafter, however, not by a knight in shining armor but rather a petite young blonde girl who is strangely familiar. They escape together down dark hallways, and Kairi narrowly avoids being kidnapped again after Saix, discovers them trying to escape. A man in black appears out of nowhere to fight Saix off, saving them. Namine calls out to him. She calls him Riku.
Kairi can't believe her ears.
Saix vanishes through a dark portal, and the man in black is about to follow him-- when Kairi's short, "wait!" stops him dead. She runs after him, elation running through her at the realization that this-- this is Riku, her friend who had been lost for so long.
But when she pushes back his hood, the face of Ansem stares down at her.
She doesn't scream. She doesn't jump back. She merely looks up at him, wondering. She does not know how this happened, but-- she knows this is her friend. Touching him now, she can see his heart, and Riku is unmistakable to her.
The two of them travel farther into the building, looking for Sora. Kairi finally spots his spiky head far below, as she leans out over a balcony railing. He is facing an approaching army of heartless.
She calls out to Sora, distracting him at a crucial moment. The heartless leap and tackle him, and Kairi can only watch, shocked and angry. Clearly the only logical thing to do at that point would be to leap from the balcony and straight into the fray of attacking heartless, armed only with her fists. Which she does. Immediately.
The heartless tackle her to the ground within seconds, but then-- they vanish. Riku appears above her, picking her up off the ground and offering her a Keyblade. She takes it cautiously, but then she understands.
With this, she can fight. And this time, she will fight. With Riku at her back, she leaps back into the fray, but this time it's the heartless that fall down, not her.
Eventually Sora catches up to them, and once Kairi shows Sora who Riku is, there are sweet reunion times and much hand-holding. The trio is united once more. Together they fight their way to the top... and then Sora and Riku go off to fight the bigtime-endboss and leave Kairi behind to wait. Again.
Sora and Riku almost get lost in the world of darkness, but Kairi's letter-- which she sent in a glass bottle at the beginning of the game-- finds them. They are able to use it as a beacon to follow home. Kairi is there waiting for them on the shore.
The three of them reunite on Destiny Islands and live happily ever after.
Until, you know, Game #3.
But that's still to come.
[ Personality ] :
Sweet, kind, and studiously loyal to her friends, Kairi is the kind of person you want to trust instinctively. And that trust would not be misplaced. For those most dear to her, she would do anything to keep them smiling, even if her actions eventually lead to her own unhappiness. (But, mostly, she's happiest when surrounded by her friends and everything is at peace with the world, so her wants and needs tend to coincide with keeping everyone cheerful.) She tends to be a fairly selfless person, concentrating on keeping the people around her happy, and sometimes forgets to think about herself. On the surface she might seem to be a simple girl with a good-natured demeanor, but underneath that skin is a very perceptive, clever girl who has a way of seeing right to the heart of things. It's very hard to keep a secret from her, and she often realizes things about the people closest to her before even they themselves do. She doesn't often show this introspective side of to other people, instead preferring to remain cheerful and upbeat even when times are bad. She refuses to feel sorry for herself, and never lets herself get drawn down into sadness or desperation. If things go bad, she picks herself up and moves on, preferring not to focus on the dark things in life.
She's got a good sense of humor and loves to tease her friends, but will always be there to support them when they need it. Whatever her friends need most, she will be there to give it to them: a good teasing remark when Riku's getting too full of himself, or a serious talk when Sora loses focus-- she's good at knowing how and when certain words are needed.
She's very organized; a great person to put in charge of a group or a school project. Making lists and plans comes easy to her, as does directing other people without seeming overly bossy. If given a project, she can become very focused, putting her heart into getting it done and getting it done right. She also has a slight artistic streak, mainly with small crafts, and likes to work with her hands -- she would build charms out of seashells when she was younger.
She is very strong in a quiet way-- unendingly patient, she can wait forever for something that is important to her. Despite this, she has recently decided that she would rather not just wait around, and wants to be right there to support and protect her friends whenever possible. She can wait and be patient if need be; however, given the choice, she would rather jump in and be active than passively waiting for events to occur, and if push comes to shove she is capable of fighting with an almost uncharacteristic fierceness. She finds her strength when protecting the ones she loves.
She never gives up on her goals and never loses faith in the people she cares about.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
She's not very good at fighting-- not as much as Riku or Sora, definitely. But she's got a very strong heart and a determination to fight anyway, and she's learning. Kairi has a habit of running headfirst into trouble when her friends are in danger, even if she has no plan and is completely weaponless. She'll stand and ward off a horde of Heartless coming to attack her friends. She might get slaughtered, but she'd stand in the way anyway.
She'd rather be helping her friends than sitting somewhere safe. Sometimes this is more of a hindrance, because she is still so new to combat that her friends will have to be watching both her and their enemies. She tries really hard, though.
She's patient, kind, and caring, and very open about the way she feels about people. If she likes you, and chances are she will, you'll know it. If she has a problem with you, you'll know that pretty quickly, too. She can be blunt when need be, although this sometimes causes her to insult the wrong people.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
Kairi has a 'pure' heart-- She is a Princess of Heart, in fact, which means her heart is completely devoid of darkness. People like her are incredibly rare in her universe and prime Damsel in Distress material, since seven Princesses of Heart are needed to unlock the way to Kingdom Hearts, or Ultimate Power. Thus, bad guys tend to want to kidnap her. A lot. She doesn't like this very much.
Also, as part of her canon, she seems to have a sixth sense about people-- whether they are 'good' or 'bad' or 'leaning slightly that way'-- She grew uneasy around Riku when he first started showing signs of turning to the darkness, seemed to know Axel was a bad guy immediately upon meeting him, and also somehow knew a certain heartless was actually Sora, despite it looking exactly like all one-hundred of its brothers. She can, in a way, sense people's hearts and the darkness or light therin.
She also has a Keyblade, which she has gotten to use for about a grand total of three seconds so far. Don't make fun of the flower-power design, because those flowers can still stab heartless like nobody's business. She'd like to learn how to use her Keyblade a bit more expertly. Maybe someone will be nice enough to teach her the ropes.
[ Sample ] :
She woke slowly, head pounding, and the first thing her conscious mind noticed was that she was wet.
Not the just-got-out-of-the-shower kind of wet. It was more like, fell-out-of-the-boat-on-the-way-to-the-island-and-nearly-drowned wet. She raised her head off the unfamiliar ground which in no way resembled the warm, soft pillows on her own bed, where she had last laid her head down to go to sleep. Rivulets of water trailed down the side of her face as she sat up. Wincing, she tried to push back the red locks of hair plastered against her skin and over her eyes.
Where was she? She was fairly certain this wasn't her bedroom. Kairi stared up at the dark sky for a long moment, lost. Something about the sky seemed wrong. It wasn't her sky, that she knew for sure. And why was she wet? She wasn't anywhere near water--
Her eyes suddenly refocused on the sky above her. No. No, it couldn't be. That didn't make any sense--
But it wasn't a sky. It was water. It was a billion gallons of swirling, moving water, somehow held up and kept from pouring into this underwater place. Now that she was looking, she could see tiny fish darting through the currents, unconcerned by the fact that they drifted above an impossible city. Kairi could only stare.
She had to be dreaming. This could not be real-- or had she truly managed to somehow end up on another world without meaning to?
Again?
For a moment, she expected to see a door of swirling light, or a man in black watching her from far away, but no matter which way she turned her head nothing familiar came into view.
She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, concentrating. All right. She had been to new worlds before. Never anything as impossible as this, but-- hadn't Sora mentioned visiting an underwater world once? She could take a deep breath and keep her cool until she knew what was going on. At least there were no Organization XIII members standing nearby, about to throw her in a cell.
There was another odd thing, though. A tiny ball of light, fluttering around behind her shoulders. She turned her head to blink at it.
"Hello?" She asked it, politely. "Could you please tell me where I am?"
It didn't answer. Perhaps it didn't speak her language. This was a strange world, more alien than she was used to, although... now that she thought about it, being surrounded by a sky of water was more enchanting than terrifying. She had always been comfortable around water, and even now, soaking wet, she felt like there much worse places to wake up.
All right, time to get down to business. She would find someone-- someone that would answer her-- and figure out what was going on. If she had been taken somewhere, Riku and Sora either had to be nearby or on their way. Kairi stood up, still dripping, and tried to figure out her options. First things first, she was going to find them.
