One of my G6 reading projects, please tell me if it's good enough or if there's anything I need to change about it! :D
(I'm using this as one of the two written works needed for Facets.)
PLANET OF NO FREEDOM
The Little Prince landed on another planet. It was a medium sized planet, but much smaller than the planet of the geographer. The prince wondered if this was the planet Earth which he had told him about. He did not see anybody. Strange… A planet with no one on it?
He turned around and spotted a lady dancing. She had jet black hair that was tied up into a bun. She was tall, slim, beautiful and wore a stunning ballet costume, a blue leotard covered with glitter and sequins and a tutu to match. What the young boy noticed most about the ballerina’s outfit was her shoes. Her pair of silver pointe shoes were worn out, and it was obvious she’d been dancing for a long time.
“Oh look! Here comes somebody to watch me dance!” she said.
The prince wondered how long the lady has been dancing. Has no one ever come to watch her dance before?
“Good morning!” the prince said politely and walked toward the dancer.
The lady did not stop to answer the greeting. She did not stop dancing and continued turning around slowly, moving her arms around gracefully. Oh how graceful her dance was.
“What planet have I landed on? Is this Earth?”
The dancer still did not stop, but gave an answer this time. “This is most definitely not the planet Earth, young boy! This is the planet Nessuna Libertas or planet of no freedom.”
“Why is it called that?”
The ballerina did not answer his question and continued to dance.
“Why aren’t you stopping?”
“I can’t,” she replied. “Can you see these strings attached to my arms and legs?”
The Little Prince walked closer to see the strings the dancer had spoken of. “I see them… But what do they do to you?” He had a confused look on his face.
“They control me.” she said simply.
“How can strings control you?”
“Somewhere out there is a puppeteer controlling these strings and making me dance.”
“Where is he? Can I see him?”
“No, not even I can see him. I don’t know where he is. Maybe in the skies? All I know is that he wants me to dance so I must dance!”
“Then how do you know that the puppeteer wishes for you to dance?”
“I can hear him mumbling sometimes for me to dance, and to dance some more. I do not really have any other choice but to dance.”
The Little Prince nodded and took a seat. “Do you mind if I sit down? I’m a bit tired.”
The dancer nodded and did more graceful turns and movements.
“Dance, dance, dance… If only I could be free!” the dancer said to herself over and over again. It seemed as if she had made a habit of saying this line.
The Little Prince now understood why it was called planet of no freedom. He started to feel pity for the dancer. How could one live life without any freedom to do what you wish? It must be hard for this dancer. She has to dance and dance and dance all her life because she is being controlled. He thought to himself as he watched the graceful movements continue.
He rested for a few moments and turned his head to get a good look at the planet. There were so many flowers around. Oh! The flowers are so beautiful! But - … If she cannot stop dancing then how can she stop to just smell the flowers, just to look at them and admire their beauty? Oh how sad. I would not want to have to be controlled so much that I would not be able to admire and take care of my flower… My flower… Memories of the flower he left behind filled his head as he wondered : Is she okay, there by herself?
“Do you really want to have freedom? Would you do anything just to be free?”
“Of course! I’d do anything to have these strings removed! To let me finally stop dancing! I feel so tired from dancing! Dance, dance, dance… If only I could be free!”
He stayed on that planet for a few days. With every passing day, he watched the ballerina dance. He watched as her dance showed her every emotion - her anger, her fears, her happiness and joy and her sadness. He watched as she did splits, por de bras and grande jetes. The planet seemed like her stage and she was the only star of the show.
One day the strings became loose and fell. The dancer stopped dancing. The controller had stopped!
“You’re free!” the prince exclaimed happily.
The dancer blinked a few times, a dazed look on her face. Out of the blue, she started to dance.
“Why are you dancing again? I thought you wanted to be free… Don’t you want freedom?” The Little Prince had a confused look on his face. First the dancer wanted to be free, then when she finally was free she just disregarded her freedom!
“I don’t know. I just suddenly feel like dancing again.”
“But I thought you said that you’d do anything to be free, to stop dancing!”
The dancer ignored him and continued her dance.
“Grown-ups are strange…” he said to himself and continued his journey to the planet Earth.
