The New Year... year of the rat... clever... he won the race... and got to be... first of the cycle...

...yes....

The Buddha... was dying... and he called... the animals to his side... only twelve came... as a reward... the Buddha said that the... twelve-year cycle... should have years with their names... taken from those animals... and those years with that name... would be sacred to those animals...

But in order to choose.... the order... they had a race across a river...

The Ox looked like he was going... to win... but the clever rat... had taken a ride on his... horns... and as they reached the riverbank... the rat jumped onto the shore first... so he won... and took the first year of the cycle...

So that's how the years were named. That's very interesting.

That was clever of the rat - it feels a little like cheating, but it was resourceful of him, so I can understand why he'd be rewarded.

That's a lovely story. Thank you for sharing it with me. Which year were you born in?

It shows... that sometimes... wisdom can win out... the ox was strong... but was not aware enough of his surroundings... had he been aware... he would have realised the rat was there...

Exactly, and he would have realized he'd been outwitted. It isn't enough to merely be good at racing; you have to be a good thinker. It makes a good moral.

What kind of qualities are associated with the Snake? I was born the year of the Pig.

Snake is... wise, creative, cautious.... but judgmental, anxious, naive, secretive...

Pig is... caring, tolerant, honest, kind... but hesitant and naive...

I think that's right... I haven't thought about it... in a long time...

Oh...I think that fits me all too well. Amanda was born the year of the Rat, though. Maybe she can help us both with our own naïveté.

I think you are. It's a wise person who can take the time to find the beauty in everything. You've always done that, even when things seem bleak.

I'm sure she will. I think we're very lucky to have the family we have.
