2011 end-of-year Vidding meme

Happy New Year everyone, I hope you all had a good holiday period. Life has been  pretty hectic for me this year but I'm still here, just. Hopefully next year I'll find my fannishness again.

My favourite video this year (of my own):
Space Girl was easily my favourite vid this year. It was an idea I'd wanted to do for a while and I'm pleased to say that it turned out pretty well.

My least favourite:
I'm not sure I have a least favourite but I guess Diamond Mind is the one I feel least invested in. That's probably because it's so short that I don't feel I really did Anya justice.

Most successful video:
Space Girl wins this one hands down. I was blown away by the response this vid received and was genuinely touched by the way it connected with sci fi fans. I was particularly pleased that it was such a success at Wiscon. It meant a great deal to me that so many people "got" it. As an added bonus members of the band were sufficiently impressed with the vid to invite me to one of their gigs (sadly, I couldn't go but it still felt pretty awesome to be asked).

Video most under appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Every year I struggle with this question. Vids usually find their audience, eventually and I'm never quite sure what criteria to use when judging appreciation. A vid in a small fandom is unlikely to get the same traffic as one in a big fandom. If a vid is successful at a con and then less so online does that make it under appreciated? After all it was appreciated by the audience it was made for. Conversely if a vid made for a con fails to blow people away at the time but then does well online does that mean it was unsuccessful because it missed its target audience?

All that being said, The Greatest Day seemed to slip below people's radar so I'm going to say it is under appreciated.

Most fun video to make:
Space Girl was the most fun to research and I loved watching all those shows and movies some of which I remembered fondly from my childhood and some of which I had never heard of and enjoyed watching for the first time. However, it wasn't the most fun to make - source wrangling can be hard (see below). I had most fun making Skinny Genes. Rizzoli and Isles femslash is practically canon so it wasn't hard to edit and Angie Harmon pulls such great faces the hard part was deciding which one's to leave on the cutting room floor.

Hardest video to make:
Hello, Space Girl fancy seeing you here. Multifandom vids have their own special ways to mess with my head. So much source, so many aspect ratios, so many different colour palettes, some footage was of really ropey quality. Also this was the vid I was most invested in emotionally and that proved quite debilitating in the early stages particularly after I had a dream in which Katherine Janeway, Emma Peel, Starbuck, Servelan, Sarah Jane Smith and  Rose Tyler all stood in a line and did a Mexican wave. How the hell can anything I edit ever compete with that level of awesome. Stupid subconscious.

Video with single sexiest moment:
Skinny Genes has plenty of eyeshagging plus bonus boob grab.

Biggest vid fail
None because I'm happy with them all and all of them because they could all be better. Oh vidding you are such a cruel mistress.

The things I've learnt this year:
That my computer won't play nicely with anything later than Premiere Pro 1.5. That being in the company of other vidders is not nearly as scary as I thought it would be. That watching my vid premiere played at a con was exactly as scary as I thought it would be.

Things to work on in 2012:
I don't have any specific goals for the upcoming year. Maybe I should work on having some or maybe I should work on being OK with not having them.

Other vidding miscellany:
First Con. Ever. And it was awesome. VidUKon in April, in Cardiff. Report is here is you haven't read it already and would like to.
festivids go live in January, very excited!

Vid projects I definitely want to get finished this coming year:
In May I will have been vidding for 10 years I would love to be able to make a vid that commemorates that in some way.
