Once again, the American with the lack of TV access is a little slow on the uptake. But here I am, writing what I have finally realized is a review of an episode of Doctor Who. I find this mildly amusing just because typically reviews are supposed to be a bit critical but I, having a generally sunny nature and a "the-glass-is-half-full" viewpoint, find it hard to be so. So you're stuck with my generally squee-ish observations and opinions.
I watched the whole episode of "Closing Time" and the word that I was left with once the credits rolled (besides What?, No! and Gah!) was: Quintessential.
From the start, with the fact that there was a Cyberman hiding in the dressing room made me giggle and you know, be scared at the same time. (I've always had a bit of a fear of someone being behind that dressing room mirror.)
The Doctor showing up to visit Craig "just because" and then finding it hard to ignore the whole light blinking thing was so cute to watch. Here he is, preparing for his death just like his last incarnation, and he's just got to go on one more adventure. That's our Doctor for us!
And this whole thing with babies now...he's certainly gotten over Nine's aversion to "domestic". Stormagedden/Stormy!!!! Had me cracking up sooo much!! All the "dialogue" between Stormy!Alfie and the Doctor tickled me completely!!
The pop-culture references were great as well. "I have an app for that" - ♥
But running underneath the fun and games of the whole episode was the fact that the Doctor was preparing to die the next day. He was very aware of his mortality here and it showed when he spoke to Stormy in his room and showed him the stars, as he told Craig Owens of it and in his nod to the children outside the TARDIS.
The Amy (and Rory, I guess, but really...the Doctor and Rory? Not so much I think) spotting just about made my heart pop which how much that squeezed me insides. You could see how he wanted to approach and talk to them and reunite but how he also knew he shouldn't at the same time. Because it wasn't the right time. Because the next time he would see them was at Lake Silencio.
And the ending with the Lady with the Eye Patch (I forget her name and I'm too lazy to look right now), I was like "Yes! Finally we're getting to know the answers (possibly) to the questions that were formed at the freakin' start of this season!"
This episode held all that I love dear about Doctor Who--the witty dialogue, the humor, the action, the monsters and the heart. It was poignant and scary and thrilling and made me laugh. And I fell in love with the whole show all over again.
