Not a cheerful update, but an update nonetheless.
To make an extremely long story...less long, I guess, my dad has been extremely sick for a very long time, and it came to a head last month (like, I was telling work I might have to leave unexpectedly, was making sure I had clean clothes to pack, getting people to watch the cat while I was out of town kind of came to a head, though thankfully it didn't get that far).
So, I bought a ticket to visit him for Thanksgiving, and e-mailed my stepmother the information (because my dad's mind isn't what it should be these days and he deletes and forgets without writing stuff down). Now, realize that, in addition to all the illness and almost-death, I also hadn't seem him in more than a year (Labor Day weekend, 2005). Friday evening, he told me he didn't want me to come and he wished that he'd known I wanted to come, before I made plans, since he has dialysis on Wednesdays and Fridays and would be sleeping off most of those days.
I tried to explain that I didn't care about not having a real Thanksgiving, or that he would be sleeping, because I was just going to see him. He was not at all swayed by the argument, and asked me again not to come.
Well, far be it for me to show up where I'm not wanted. So, instead of staying in DC and being pathetic, I'm going to Los Angeles for three days (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, leaving Saturday morning). D'you think that's why we get two parents?
Nothing else new going on. I love the weather change, being able to wear sweaters, and snuggling with the kitty, even if she has taken to waking me up at 5 am by yowling from the other side of the apartment.
