We left for Lubbock for Nicks gastric bypass on Tuesday (10-9).
Tuesday: Super Yummy Soda
Nick had decided he wanted one of his "last meals" to be Joe's Crab shack. So, we went there Tuesday night. I had never been before, and it was yummy.
But the soda was SOOO good!! Lubbock has really good water, so it makes soda taste SOOO much better then New Mexico fountain drinks. I know its really silly, but the soda was light and fizzy and I could feel the freshness/lightness in my nose. (Which is a little weird, I know). Nick thought my obsession with the soda was really cute.
Wednesday: The best Chicken Strips on the face of the planet
We took some time to get lost and get to know Lubbock. For dinner, we took a chance and ate at Cheddar's. We dont have one here, and Nick had never been to the one in Little Rock, so it was a surprize. The food was really good, and everything was REALLY decently priced. For the two of us (Nick had ribs and steak, I had ribs and chicken strips), an appitizer and drinks it was like $35!
The Chicken Strips were AMAZING!!! The batter was crunchy with a liitle sweetness. The chicken was super moist and yummy. Serious, they have ruined me for all other chicken strips.
Thrusday: Surgery
We got up early and went to the hospital. We were both nervous, but the surgery went really well. Surprizing well. Within a few hours, Nick was wanting to get up and walk around, which surprized everyone. Dr. Syn encourages his patients to walk around often, but you dont have to start walking around until your out of the post-op recovery. Nick was up and walking IN post-op. The nurses were even surprized. They were getting all prepared to have to help him get around, and Nick just swung his legs off the the bed and stood up like it was nothing.
Nick asked Dr. Syn if he could go home early, which shocked him a little. Dr. Syn said that even though he was doing really well, he would sleep better at night if Nick stayed for the night in the hospital. So we did.
Friday: Bad Chair!
Once we got out of the hospital, Nick was really happy. We went to the hotel, but he was feeling so good that he wanted to get out on the town for a while. Over in Abliene there was a heroclix event, and he really wanted to go. Being the nice person I am, we went. Nick got all set up, and I decided to rest in the car for a while. After about an hour and half, Nick went to sit in a chair that he didnt realize had wheels, and the chair rolled out from under him. He got freaked out and tensed up as he fell, so he bruised his wound. When I came back and found out what happened, we left to go back to the hotel.
Luckily he was ok, just a sore scar and a sore ego.
Saturday, Sunday, and Monday: Sheer and utter boredom
As part of the whole out of town surgery thing, we have to stay in town for a week, just in case. So Saturday, Sunday, and Monday we stayed in town. With me so pregnant and Nick healing, there isnt much we were interested in doing. So, we slept and watched tv. And slept. And watched tv.
The most interesting thing that happened during this time was that Nick got to take out his pain pump. During surgery, Dr. Syn puts in some tubes that put pain meds directly into the surgery area. The idea is that if your not in pain, your going to eat when you should and move more, reducing the chances of getting a blood clot.
So, Sunday morning, Nick took out the pump as per Dr. Syn's instructions. There was like 7 or 8 inches of tubing in him! It was freaky. After he took it out, he began feeling even better. We think that having something in there might have been irritating the area.
Anyway, I dont think I have ever been so bored in my life. It was bad. We couldnt stand it anymore. So Nick promised to avoid rolly chairs, and we left for home Tuesday morning. Its about a 5 hour drive, so its not too far to come home for a while.
We have to go back for Nick's one week appointment on Friday. We are both just so happy the surgery is over with. Nick already feels like he has more energy, and soon he will be seeing lots and lots of results.
Honestly, it really feels like we have such a better quality of life to look forward to together.
