Nothing unmanly about knitting (Open)

The Loft didn't faze him much anymore.

The Once-ler was perfectly content to knit here, especially when his tent was full of wildlife.  It was probably his own fault for installing air conditioning.

After an hour of working though, he began to wish he had someone to talk to, at least, while he worked.

Emil on the other hand liked stitching his own clothes, or at least embellishing them. It wasn't as if he could not ask someone else to do it; he just missed working with his hands sometimes.

He noticed the Once-ler at work. "What are you making?" he asked.

"A Thneed." He looked up from his work with a pleasant smile. The Once-ler had yet to meet anyone who knew what his invention was by name alone yet, but, he remained hopeful it could happen.

"Oh," Emil said, wondering why the word sounded so familiar. He peered at the odd garment. "What's it supposed to do?"

"Anything and everything!" He beamed from ear to ear, tapping the Thneed with one finger. "This fine thing can do the job of a thousand other objects."

"Even in that shape? It seems a shame to mold it to do some....things," Emil said. Of course, how was he to say that he was thinking of diapers?

"Oh? Like what, exactly? " Once-ler tried to think of an everyday household object he would find offensive, and failed. "It is machine washable, and re-useable."

"Well like diapers and washcloths. Or something for a kid to play with," Emil replied bluntly. "It's a bit on the furry side, isn't it?"

This was one of the better reactions.

"Softest material on the planet. It would be great for kids to play with! Considering just what all it can do, they would never be bored." He tugged and folded it into a teddy bear and offered it over for inspection.

Then again, since he was a lawyer, Emil had learned to be diplomatic.

He looked at the teddy bear. "Interesting. What fabric did you use for this?"

"Truffula tree tufts. I use them for my Thneed making."

"I see. And where do these Truffula trees come from?" Emil asked curiously.

"There's this entire valley just full of them. Pretty amazing place, really. Also where I'm living right now." It was a pity he didn't have pictures to show, but, then again, photos didn't do it justice.

"An entire valley huh? Sounds nice----but is that going to last for your business?" Emil asked. He was an economist by training before going to law school, so he couldn't help but ask this hypothetically.

"Well...um, fair question I suppose, but this stuff literally grows on trees, and demand is not exactly skyrocketing. Trees are nice in that they do grow new tufts yearly."

"Demand isn't skyrocketing....yet," Emil pointed out. "You never know if it will snowball, then you might have to find a more sustainable way of doing it instead of just picking off the tufts or cutting the trees down."

The Once-ler frowned a little. Oddly enough he had a lot of conversations along these lines here. "Some people have suggested I plant more. They apparently take thirty years to grow, so it isn't really a quick solution. But, ah, again things are good right now."
