Crossing lines

Have you ever written your characters cross-genre? Did it work? Would you do it again? What did you like/not like about putting characters through a different set of paces?

I tend to recycle characters to fit particular situations, especially if they are strong voices in my head. Hans (heil_hans) was first created for a WWII game set in Paris 1941, and he obviously needed to undergo a little plot-hook to exist in the modern day after that game was over.

Ambria who I currently play in our_last_resort started out as a D&D character and has been incarnated in quite a few online games - she's been a librarian, an artificial construct, an Initiative soldier, and a demon hunter. Tamara from that game has has been through just as many incarnations, if not more.

I think that characters can be successfully brought across genres as long as they are adapted properly for the new setting - it's fun, really. I enjoy recycling them.
