I once received advice in an English class about 'word strength' and the relative impact of verbs, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. The teacher said that nouns and verbs are the strongest; while adjectives weaken your writing and adverbs weaken it the most. According to her, a line such as:

"They're coming," Jack whispered, his skin crawling. He slammed the door shut.

...is stronger than:

"They're coming," Jack said fearfully, terrified. He shut the door with great force.

Do you agree or disagree? How do you approach adjectives and adverbs in your writing?

Completely agree. It's one of the things I look for during editing. (During the initial writing process, I'm just trying to get words onto the page.)
