Thursday - Guilty Pleasures

For today, share with us 100 words about your character indulging in a guilty pleasure.

Haylee ran her fingers over the spines of the books on the shelf. She loved books. She had loved books since she was a young girl. She had always used them as an escape from her real world problems. She hated her real life, but even the lives of the kids in It seemed slightly more pleasant by comparison. Sure, they had to deal with a scary ass clown, but at least those kids had friends to depend on.

“Why are we here?” she heard Sy ask behind her.

“Because sometimes we have to do things that don’t involve you or one of your illegal activities,” she teased lightly. Being around books was one of the few things that could bring out the lighter side of her personality. “Maybe I want to shop for myself for a change.”

“This place tastes funny,” Sy complained.

Haylee had to think for a second before she realized what he was probably referring to. “That’s the smell of old books, Sy. I love that smell.” She took a deep breath and smiled. “If you really don’t like it, go wait outside.”

He seemed to think on that for a second before shaking his head. “No, this stuff is important to you. I don’t get it, but that’s what matters.”

She looked back at him and smiled. “Thanks.”
