Trey watched through the door as Dree continued to push herself past even her limits, working with the therapists to get her legs working again. It didn't take a genius to see how much pain she was in, but arguing with her was only pissing her off more.

She'd already banned him to the hallway, and it was easier to keep an eye out for El, who had gone out to get an update on the damage. The muffled cries from the other side of the door got his attention and Trey stiffened as the orderlies helped pull Dree back up to a standing position.

"Damnit, Aud," he cursed under his breath. She was going to do more damage trying to recover than the initial injury caused, at this rate.

She stopped at the door and waited until one of the Tin Men standing guard opened it for her. The hospital was one of the few places in Central that was miraculously spared heavy damage and it was being guarded tightly. With no government chaos was overtaking the immediate shock. Longcoats have been making raids on any building operating with power. The news she'd received from the Captain was not good. The only reason he gave it to her was that Dree was the closest thing to a government official they had at the moment. She assumed he was hoping D would immediately take charge. El had laughed in his face. She told him that he'd better start searching for any other officials who hadn't abandoned their posts and took off for parts unknown ( ... )

He couldn't help but laugh at the news. "How do you figure that?" As long as he'd known her, she'd never held any position of power. She'd gone to a hell of a lot of meetings, but other than long hours with Harry, she was just a librarian.

Trey took the opportunity to hold El - best as he could with one arm still in a sling - and kissed her temple. "I don't know, hon. But, whatever we do," he said, leaning back slightly to hold her face, "we do it together."

The sound of yelling made him smile slightly. "I'm not allowed in. Tread carefully." He kissed El's forehead and pulled away to open the door for her.

"Just let go!" Dree's knuckles were white, holding tight to the railing. She was breathing heavy and trying not to cry. The pain was excruciating, but she needed to get back to fighting form. She had to be able to walk and she had to get to the cave.

Without Harry, she was going to have to do even more to keep the witch contained. Her arm was shaking as the tears fell. She couldn't do it.

The witch was going to get out because she wasn't strong enough.

Gives Trey a look, "because the government officials that did survive all ran like chickens. Dree, as Harry's Executive, is the only government official here."

She turned and smiled when she heard Dree yell in anger. "She's stubborn as all get out."

Trey's eyes closed and he cured heavily, though quietly, as they were in public. "Damn Celcians. No offense," he added a second later, giving El a small smile.

"So who is running things, then? Have we defaulted to Council rule or something?" he asked, only half-kidding.

El waved her arm at Trey, dismissing his need to apologize. "I have no idea who the Hell is running things. I'm going to contact the Council and see what they want to do. We need a government. Now more than ever."

There was another shout from behind the door and Trey sighed. "What we need, is to get her to stop." Trey nudged El to the door and whispered, "She'll listen to you before me. And she's ignoring me, anyway." He gave El a shrug and rolled his eyes slightly.

"She needs to stop for today." He gave El a look an hoped that she could also see what he did. "I know she's thinkin' twenty steps ahead, but it's the first one I'm worried about." Dree needed to sit down, to lie down, to recover.

She needed to grieve.

"Why is she ignoring you?" El asked. "Let me guess, you told her it was time to stop for the night and it pissed her off. So now you want me to go in there and make her pissed at me." She playfully slaps his cheek, "having one wife mad at you is bad enough." She winked.

She turned as Dree yells in anger again. She took a deep sigh and moved to the door, hobbling on her crutches. "Maybe she'll take pity on the other cripple." She nodded her head to the door. "Open the door a then pray for me."

She hobbles in and tells the therapist with Dree to go. "I'll take it from here."

"Actually, I tried to help her up." Trey kissed El's head and pushed the door open for El. "Go with the Gods," he told her, letting go of the door long enough to pat her butt, then winked.

Dree looked up at the sound of El's voice and huffed. "I'm not done," she snapped and swung around awkwardly, trying to readjust her grip on the bars. Her breathing was already heavy and the sweat was dripping; she was exhausted, but couldn't allow herself to stop.

Gritting her teeth, Dree dragged one leg forward and winced at the pain shooting down her leg. Taking a few deep breaths, Dree pushed herself up and pivoted, trying to use the motion to swing her other leg forward. She didn't even have to look - though she did - to see the face El was giving her.

Dree knew she was pushing too hard; that she'd snapped at Trey for no real reason; that she was being childish. Stopping, Dree re-gripped the handle and felt her legs giving out just about the time her will did. She didn't exactly crumple to the platform, but had she let go of the railing, Dree might have rolled off and onto the floor ( ... )

As soon as Dree collapsed, El dropped her crutches and hopped over to her. She dropped down and ignored the twinge of pain in her leg. She gathered Dree into her arms and held her. "Shh, I'm right here, my love. Let it out." She glanced up and saw Trey move in.

She lowered her head and let her wife curl into her hold. "Cry, sweetie." El closed her eyes, the last thing Dree needs to hear right now is that she is the government. El took a deep breath. Tomorrow will contact the council. For now, she will hold her wife and love her. And assure her she's not alone.

"She's gonna get out," Dree said in a quiet whisper. "Not gonna be able to..." She had to roll slightly, as the pressure was painful. "...hurts..."

Trey was waving to one of the orderlies, realizing that if Dree was down, it was best to leave her there. Once she'd calmed down, they could get her up and back into bed. Cursing his injury, all Trey could do was climb up behind El and support her.

Whatever was to come, they wouldn't let Dree go through it alone.

"If she gets out, we'll deal with it." El told Dree, "Right now, we're going to be here for you, and get you back on your feet." She felt Trey move in behind her and wrap his arms around them both. She closed her eyes and leaned slightly into him, taking the comfort he was giving to her.

El kissed the top of Dree's head and gave a slight smile. "I'm going to tell you something I tell you frequently." She leaned and pressed a light kiss on Dre's lips, "I want to get you into bed."

Dree's hand went instinctively to her stomach. Chapel had told her about the internal damage and what else was removed. It wasn't like she was actively using most of what was lost - and in her experience, those organs would grow back - but Trey was the first man she'd ever considered having children with.

Granted, most of those thoughts were fleeting and based on something else, entirely, but now, she wouldn't even have that chance. And it was hard enough to hear; she couldn't imagine telling Trey.

Of course, she didn't know that Chapel had already told both of them.

Dree took a slow breath, head pounding and feeling like she'd been run over by a truck. "I want to go home," she said simply. She didn't want to be in the hospital. She didn't want to see people watching her fail.

El felt Trey tighten behind her. Home. That was another animal entirely. They hadn't said anything yet because of her recovery, but ... they had no home to go to. She and Trey had gone through the rubble of what had been their condo and found as much of their things as they could. Including Dree's precious box. That had been the first thing they were bound to find. Anything else after that was gravy.

They were staying on the less damaged side of the city with Chapel. Her place had been mostly spared, as had the North side of the city. She'd told them they could stay as long as they wanted, but their goal was to find someplace else as soon as they could. If nothing else, she had her ship. They could live in orbit until they could rebuild.

But telling Dree that was something they had yet to figure out how to do.
