Have you heard of the story of the tin man? A man who fell in love with a woman only to have his love for her challenged. He was imprisoned in a tin shell and kept away from his heart for so long he lost his own. And then a miracle happened and he met a girl who released him from his prison. In his search he eventually found not only his heart, but his family as well. It is a sad story, but with a happy ending.

I have not.

I wonder what happens after the "ending"?

It depends on the many versions of the story. In the versions I know, he either got his family back through the gifts of those who rewarded his help in saving the princess, or he never got over the loss of his love, but was able to love again and have the support of his family and friends for the rest of his life.

He either gets it all back or accepts something new?

Yes, that's essentially it. Life in all it's forms is what you make of it. He had to work for his happiness in both situations. Happiness earned is happiness rewarded.

"Happiness earned is happiness rewarded"?

That should be happiness earned is equal to happiness rewarded.

I skipped a word or two there. :)

Mmm... I am not sure I understand it, still. How do you earn happiness?

In his case, his wife saved the life of a child who would become a Goddess as she grew older, so his wife earned the gift of her own life and she returned to her tin man and their children. So in that case the happiness was earned. :)

There are plenty of people who do good things but are not rewarded...

This is true. In their case they were rewarded.

I heard a similar story once.. only it was about a woman, instead of a man.
