Five for Friday

List five things you weren't supposed to do, but you did anyway.

1. Wind up alone with my father's uncle Frank.

I was only nine, and didn't understand. He seemed like a nice old man. My dad found me before anything bad happened (and he broke Frank's nose), but that's the closest I've been to a direct, personal tragedy.

2. Lying to Tan's parents about a party we were going to.

My parents don't put lots of rules on me, just more like a "be responsible" motif that if I'm not, they make me make up for it. (Or at least they did - it's even less strict now that I'm an "adult." ) So I was going to a party in high school that there were going to be boys at. My dad was okay with it, but told me that I couldn't lie to Tanit's parents about it - they're more traditional muslims, and Dad said we had to respect their beliefs. Well, I helped Tan lie to them - she got in a lot of trouble, and I got the "We're very disappointed in you" speech from my parents.

3. Go to anti-war protests in 2003.

It's not that my parents were against the protests. They just wanted me to be at school.

4. Play Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" at the school variety show.

It was my senior year, I was scheduled to perform "Immigrant Song," and it was the last night of the show. I liked the guitar solo stuff and the "faux orgasm" vocals. I was 18.

There were complaints.

My dad, semi-jokingly, told me he never wanted to hear me perform that song again. I think it was a compliment.

5. Beer Bong on my 21st birthday

More a "shouldn't do" rather thana "not supposed to do," but it's close enough. It was a beer bong. My first one.
