Magazines? Do I read them!

Let just start by saying I love magazines! There's something about the format that is visually appealing - plus articles are great in that you can read them so quick in between all the other things you got going on. I used to read a whole lot of magazines in waiting rooms for auditions and appointments as a kid, so I developed a real fondness for them I suppose. I'm also a fan of 'zines - used to pick them up at cafes and at a couple of the local bookstores when I got the chance as a teen. I always thought about making one of my own, but well - never really had the confidence to. Felt self-conscious about putting even more of myself out into the world than acting already forced out of me.

The very first magazine I got? Highlights for Kids. My grandparents got me a yearly subscription until I outgrew it.

Anyhow! In the here and now:

I read National Geographic, Time, and US News sometimes because they're around the house from uncle Hans subscribing to them. He also subscribes to Der Spiegel, and I glance at it sometimes but it's in German so you know - I don't really understand a lot of it. If something is interesting enough, I go to their website and read the english version.

When I lived in LA and had the money to, I subscribed at various times to music mags like JazzTimes , Under the Radar, Filter, and Paste. Sometimes I picked up an issue of Spin at the bookstore if it had bands I liked it in it. On very rare occasions, an issue of Rolling Stone - but generally it's a pretty crap magazine.

These days, my magazine subscriptions total two:

One magazine I have an ongoing subscription to (and have for about seven years now) is Record Collector - it's UK published, but it's still pretty much the magazine for record collectors. They put out a great price guide. And the other i just subscribed to very recently - Drumhead, which is a magazine for drummers which has interviews with drummers and such but also has a whole bunch of teaching you stuff in each magazine. It even comes with a cd in each issue, and they have some great videos on their website too.

I tend to keep back issues of my music magazines in the boxes that house my record collection, so I've got some issues of all of the above, heh. I'm kind of a packrat that way when it comes to music things. I also own some old out of print music mags like some issues of Crawdaddy! , High Fidelity, Ray Gun, and some real rare copies of The Jazz Review.

/ end magazine geekery
