Black History Month ICONS!
Yes, it's Black History Month here in the United States. While I realize there's controversy surrounding this celebration, I personally feel it's appropriate to recognize it.
I have many African-American (black) friends -- and I think it's fitting to honor both them and the many amazing black people of history. Yes, I agree with historian Carter G. Woodson that the idea was hopefully that this be a temporary thing. And yet so many people still appear to be ignorant of the names and faces of many outstanding black men and women. On top of that, I still witness constant bigotry against blacks. Who doesn't? Clearly we need some reminding to straighten up and fly right (as my mother used to say)... (smile)
So! All that said, I have a dozen icons featuring various black people I personally admire. By the way, if there's interest, I will gladly make more. In fact, I'd be delighted to do so!

Louis Armstrong
I was brought up on Louis Armstrong's music. I just loved this big-hearted man!
Armstrong, in fact, was a major financial supporter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights activists, but mostly preferred to work quietly behind the scenes, not mixing his politics with his work as an entertainer. The few exceptions made it more effective when he did speak out; Armstrong's criticism of President Eisenhower, calling him "two-faced" and "gutless" because of his inaction during the conflict over school desegregation in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957 made national news. As a protest, Armstrong canceled a planned tour of the Soviet Union on behalf of the State Department saying "The way they're treating my people in the South, the government can go to hell" and that he could not represent his government abroad when it was in conflict with its own people. (And who can blame him?)

I think I'm lucky to know so many special people of color (not just African-Americans, by the way) -- and to have them as friends. I can't imagine what my life would be like if I only interacted with people who were one color...
For that matter, I can't imagine life without people from all walks of life as friends and associates! IDIC, as Mr. Spock would say -- Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. YES!
