"Mouse on the Mayflower" -- Got It!
I mentioned here that I had bought "Mouse on the Mayflower" on eBay.
Well, it's here and it played quite well -- especially for such an old tape!
Those unfamiliar with this Rankin and Bass TV special from 1968 (!!!), can check out the IMDb.com listing. (It's not very good, however!) Yes, it was made by Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass, the creators of the famous stop-motion animated "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" that features Burl Ives in the role of Sam the Snowman (the story narrator), along with an original orchestral score composed by Johnny Marks. ('Rudolph' is one of the most popular -- and longest-running -- Christmas specials in television history.)
MotM doesn't have that same level of appeal, but Marilyn mistressmarilyn and I have been hoping to get it forever! We're not sure how many years it actually played on American TV for Thanksgiving, but it wasn't all that many. And (needless to say) in those days there were no VCRs, so the only 'tape' we ever had of it was an audio tape! (Played pretty much over and over until it gave up the ghost...)
This movie tells the story of the Pilgrims coming to America -- and their meeting with the native Indians. Then (of course) it describes the first Thanksgiving. There are several songs included, the most notable being "Mayflower" and "November." And could Tennessee Ernie Ford ever belt those out! (whew)
Anyway, after years of wanting it, it's exciting to finally own it!
Plus, it didn't cost us $52.99 (I remember the first time I searched for it the price was even higher than that) -- or even close to that!
We watched it last night and will watch it again on Thanksgiving (or during Thanksgiving week, anyway).
