Yesterday (January 25) was our parent's anniversary. It was 80 years since they were wed (in 1942). Our sister Sue (Susan Charlene) was born on January 31, 1943 (one year later, in other words).
Dad died in 1998 (he was 77), and Mom died in 2000 (she was 76). When you think about it, they were both quite young. People frequently live into their 80's and 90's these days (and even to 100 or more). But both Mom and Dad had bad health, with multiple issues. The main thing was diabetes. (Mom had lost a leg, and Dad a toe.)
Anyway, they had 56 years of married life together, and that's pretty impressive!
I can't recall the year they reenacted their wedding, unfortunately, though we have photos of the event. I personally stood in for the pastor! This was done in the front room of our Fessenden home - they were originally married in the front room of Grandpa Ed's home (Grandma didn't pass until December of 1952 - the year I was born).
Dad served in World War II in the Army Air Corps. Mom stayed with Grandpa Ed and Grandma May and Aunt Dorothy (Dad's youngest sister). Uncle Albert was also in the service, but Uncle Alfred (his twin brother) was 4-F (he had been born with physical problems, and I remember he was very bitter about that). I also recall that Mom and Sue spent some time back east with Grandma Elsie and Grandpa Harry (in their Minnesota home). (There was the very strong belief that it was dangerous to be in Oregon during the war.)
Well, that's a tiny piece of our family history. Please feel free to chime in and share your history in Reply to this!
