"This is our time"

I can't be the only one who thinks of Mikey's speech in The Goonies every time Obama uses those words..."Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here. That's all over the second we ride up Troy's bucket...Come on, guys, this is our time!" Could Obama's speechwriter secretly love The Goonies, or possibly know that that line would appeal to a certain sector of the populace? Who knows, but it makes me giggle every time I hear it, because he says it in his characteristic "inspirational" way and all I can think of is little Sean Astin and a geeky kids movie.

On a less light-hearted note: I'm profoundly uneasy about what happened to Hillary in this campaign. I certainly will/do support Obama and think he's a good guy and will most likely be a good president and all; and I don't really think he personally did anything wrong. Nevertheless, I do feel like there was an undertone of sexism in how Clinton was dealt with overall. Do I think that Obama prevailed simply because sexism beat out racism? Goodness no, I'm not that stupid. I think it's much, much more complicated than that, and it makes me half wish I was back in academia and could write one of the many books or articles that will surely come out of all of this. The millions of hours and pages of documentary evidence of the campaigns and media coverage are a treasure trove for political sociologists and those studying gender, race, and power. The analyses will undoubtedly be all over the map, but I bet I'll find a few of them credible and interesting. I think I'm more interested in sociologically analyzing the election than in the election itself!
