Birthday drabbles part 1

Usagi lay in Mamoru’s arms, her back to his chest as he rested against the base of the tree and read a book written by some philosopher many centuries ago. She napped lightly, safe and comfortable in the shade and his strong embrace, her finger gently grazing against his arm in random patterns and swirls. Her sneakers and socks had been discarded, as had his, to feel the tickling grass and solid earth on their feet. Her legs were bare but for the little denim shorts she wore which complemented her chequered red and white fitted sleeveless top. She was happy here, and she wondered how there could be anything better in the world.

“Mamo-chan?” she mumbled, her mind half in sleep and half awake.

“Hmm?” he replied absent mindedly as he turned the page, his chin resting comfortably on her blonde head.

Usagi listened to the crisp flip of the paper, content to listen to the sounds around her before she spoke again. A few birds chirped within the rustling leaves and Mamoru’s heart beat steadily in rhythm with his breath.

“Are you happy?” she asked finally.

The book in his hand lowered slightly and she felt his head shift. “Yes,” he said. “Why do you ask?” His voice was curious and maybe a little concerned. She hadn’t meant to worry him.

“I was only thinking,” she said lightly.

He placed the book down carefully. “Oh?”

“Mhmm.”

“What’s on your mind?”

Usagi thought about her answer. “Well,” she said, “sometimes, even people who love each other deeply don’t want to be together always.” She tilted her head up to meet his eyes. “Sometimes they need to be apart for a while to be sure that they truly love each other. Like being on a break.”

The slightly concerned confusion which had creased Mamoru’s eyebrows disappeared suddenly, replaced with an amused smile. “Usako, have you been watching Friends again?”

She ducked her head back down quickly. “Maybe,” she conceded.

The chuckle he let out rumbled his chest and vibrated through her, a feeling which quelled her embarrassment.

He pulled her suddenly closer, wrapping both arms tightly around her and planting a kiss on her cheek. “I think having a lifetime’s worth of separation from you was more than enough for me, thank you very much.”

But Usagi was not satisfied. “Still,” she said, “we’re going to be together for a very long time. Are- are you comfortable with that?”

Mamoru shrugged and held her tightly again. “Yes I am.”

Seeing him so blasé about the topic was very reassuring. “Well, what about me?” she teased. “What if I became bored with you?” She pointed to herself and them poked him in the arm.

Mamoru bent around slightly to look at her smiling face. For a brief second she thought she had upset him, but his own teasing grin bloomed. “Oh, I suppose it wouldn’t be so bad if you left me for someone else.”

She was about to protest but he wouldn’t let her. “I’d just wait patiently until that other man died and then I’d woo you again.”

She giggled at the word 'woo'. “What makes you so sure you could win me back?”

He whispered something into her ear.

“Mamo-chan!” Her face went deep red as she swatted his arm repeatedly.

He kissed her as they laughed, drinking in each other and content with the world around them.

Usagi spoke once they broke apart. “If you married another girl, I’d- I’d,” she seemed riled at the very thought of it, “I’d rip her eyes out!” She added a small nod for emphasis.

He didn’t believe that for a second. “No you wouldn’t. You’re too nice for that. You cry all night when you kill a Youma.”

She deflated at the truth of his words. “You’re probably right.”

“Makoto would do it for you, though.” Mamoru said after thinking about it.

Usagi looked up at him again. “That’s true.”

“And Rei.”

“No, Rei would just glare at you and silently curse you for all eternity.”

He laughed at that. “Minako would string me up by my genitali-”

“Stop! I know!” she yelled, placing her hands over her ears. “I don’t want to hear what she would do to them.” She looked up at him with a twinkle in her eyes. “I’m very fond of those parts.”

He gave her a light shove at her innuendo. “So am I.”

They both stared as a butterfly fluttered past, orange and black floating in the air currents. “Minako can be scary when she’s Venus,” Mamoru said, “even more so than when Rei is Mars.”

“I know.” Usagi’s eyebrows creased slightly as something occurred to her. “I’m not scary when I fight?”

“No,” he said, “you’re perfect.”

They kissed under the shade of the maple.
