I'm going to take that as a massive compliment since he wrote About A Boy, which actually was pretty good.
In all honesty, I have no clue what to compare Econ to, but that's because I can count on my fingers how many 'modern' books I've read. (Lack of time more than motivation). But film-wise, I think I love Econ so much because it reminds me of the good stuff of back in the not-so-long-ago day.
Movies like High Fidelity and Jerry Maguire in which the characters basically looked at the cracks within themselves and their relationships, and with male friendships which hark back to movies like Diner.
