He’d made it home in the dawn hours, wearily heading to the shower to rinse off the grime of the Christmas Eve graveyard shift at St Christine’s Hospital which seemed to have infused itself to his entire being. Mamoru had noticed immediately that the tree had been finished and the presents (that had previously been sitting in a temporary spot by the dining table) now had taken their merry little places under the lowest glittering boughs of the Christmas tree. It was a beautiful sight: Usagi must have worked hard.
His sharp eyes also noticed that his gifts to her were also there -how she found them he would never know, but she always did (which was why he had them wrapped in the store)- and they sat there with all the others, waiting patiently to be opened.
When he’d fallen asleep, it was with a grateful smile for the warm little beauty that was already asleep next to him.
“Mamo-chan? Are you awake?” Her voice called out from downstairs. “Can we open the presents now?!”
How did she know?! He hadn’t even gotten out of the bed yet. It was like she had some kind of special Christmas-gift-opening-time radar. He figured it must have developed during her years in the Tsukino household. He pitied her parents.
He dragged himself out of the bed, slipping on a pair of black cotton pyjama bottoms and threw a glance at the oversized digital clock radio on Usagi’s side of the bed. It was four twenty six in the evening. A warm smile spread across his face, his midnight eyes lighting up: she’d let him sleep twelve entire hours of Christmas day, despite the fact that it was her absolute favourite holiday and he’d ended up voluntarily working it when she’d practically begged him to take the time off.
“Mamo-chan? What’s taking you so long?”
He laughed, she’d tried to keep the impatience out of her voice, but that was about as possible as getting Ceithin to wear a leather thong.
“I’ll be down in a minute Usako.”
He slipped on a t-shirt and headed straight to the bathroom for bladder relief.
When he made it downstairs it was to find Usagi in the dining room, dressed in her grey house sweats and a pyjama top and holding a cup of steamy, plain, black coffee ready for him. On the table were the necessary utilities for cereal and a plate with a toasted bagel on it.
“I didn’t know whether you wanted breakfast or dinner, so I put an M&S chicken pot pie in the oven just in case.”
“How long will that take?”
Usagi shrugged. “Around twenty minutes.”
“Have you eaten already?”
“Yep.”
He picked up the bagel and took large chunk out of it, chewing it with the fervour of a starving wolf. He offered Usagi a bite with a glint in his eyes, pulling it away just as she opened her mouth.
She frowned, scrunching blonde eyebrows as her lips formed an annoyed pout. He took the opportunity to kiss her.
“You did that on purpose!”
His eyes squinted. “Well, yeah.”
She opened her mouth expectantly, this time he let her take a bite. He was rewarded with a smile as she chewed.
His eyes softened. She was something special, everything from her beautiful face, stuffed with bread to the sweetness that was integral to her soul. “How about we open some presents while we wait for the chicken to cook?”
The smile she gave him sent his heart fluttering. “As long as you open one of mine first.”
“Is it another autographed celebrity photograph?” He teased with a gleam in her eye.
She practically glared daggers at him. “No.” It seemed that the previous year’s fiasco, where both she and Ceithin had bought Mamoru similar gifts, had not quite erased itself from her memory.
“But it was great fun.”
“For you maybe.” She said, walking towards the Christmas tree.
He caught her by the ass and dragged her back towards him, pulling her flat against his own body. His hands snaked their way around and up her torso. “For you too if I recall. You were pretty vocal last Christmas.”
She let his hands trail their way further up, enjoying the feel of them for a few moments longer before pushing them away. “That was last Christmas, this time I’ve had to spend it doing two loads of laundry, listening to my mother complain about my father for an hour and watching C-movie Christmas flicks. Alone.”
“You could have stayed in bed.”
She flumped herself onto the floor by the presents. “That’s a silly suggestion. It’s Christmas.”
He walked over to her, bending over to kiss the top of her head. “I asked you yesterday to wake me up early.”
She looked up at him, her eyes soft and loving. “You looked peaceful. And you’ve been working so hard, you needed rest.”
He bent down again and kissed her deeply. Her hand reached up and gently grasped his chin, her fingers tracing his stubble and shooting electricity through his body down to his core. He broke it an looked at her. “Do you reckon the hot pot is done yet?”
Usagi’s lips pinched but her smile soon came back. Her eyes shifted to the crystal clock on the mantle. “It’s only been in there for fifteen minutes.”
“So…no?”
She shook her head, lifting up a small box wrapped in gold paper. “Present number one.”
Mamoru was about to reach for it when he stopped suddenly, his head shooting up.
“What?” She asked, concerned. He lifted a hand to shush her, a smile spreading across his face.
It clicked almost instantly when Michael Jackson’s young voice began singing Santa Clause is Coming to Town. She rolled her eyes, amused at his reaction.
He extended his arm. “We must boogie.”
Usagi giggled as she was wrenched up off the floor and spun around. She did her best to keep the gift she was holding from flying out of her grasp.
Santa Clause is comin’a town!
Santa Clause is comin’a town.
Santa Clause is comin’.
To toooooowwwwnnn!
Usagi’s giggles turned to full on laughter as Mamoru butchered the song with his own voice and made her dizzy enough to throw up. He took her in his arms and dance with her around the room, twirling with her every so often as little Michael sang on about checking lists twice, backed up by the rest of the Jackson 5.
When the song ended and moved onto something more modern (and by modern Christmas music, it was mostly stuff from the sixties) the couple collapsed onto the sofa, with Usagi giggling and Mamoru slightly out of breath. She sat up and straddled him, bending down and kissing his collarbone. “I’m so dizzy.” She remarked as she leaned her forehead against him. “And people say I’m the crazy one.”
“Right,” He picked her up and manoeuvred so that she was sitting on the sofa with him leaning over her, causing her to yelp, “I can’t have those sorts of comments flying around.”
Her eyes went round with apprehension at the sly grin on his face.
He was about to let his fingers loose on her sides, but her hands flew up in front of his face, displaying the slightly crushed gold box. She smiled sheepishly. “Peace offering?”
His midnight eyes shifted from the gift to her face. “Saved by the gift.” He took it out of her hands and flopped himself next to her. “What is it?”
She lifted her eyebrows. “Why do people always ask that? Just open it.”
He shook it. “It sounds like there’s something rattling in there.”
Usagi didn’t know whether it was because he’d grown up in an orphanage, or whether he just liked annoying her by trying her patience, but he always took ages to open a present. “Just rip off the paper.”
He did, eventually, after examining it for what seemed like ages. They were a simple pair of cufflinks, gold, with three small diamonds in a row on the side. “This is really great Usako, thank you.” He kissed her and she smiled, pleased. “These are like the ones you bought Ceithin for Christmas last year, aren’t they?”
“Yeah, I remembered you liked them, but I figured gold would suit you better. You know, because, well, because.” She didn’t need to clarify, gold and Mamoru went together like milk and cookies. Maybe that’s why Mamo-chan and Mina get along, they’re both affiliated with it; even though she was reluctant to admit it, her logic seemed to apply to her and Ceithin as well. “My turn?” She got up and made her way to the tree, inspecting the various colourful objects littered underneath, “Hm.” A red one caught her eye. “Is this one from you?”
Mamoru made his way next to her, a dubious look on his features. “You know full well which ones are mine, you found them and put them under the tree.”
That sheepish smile of hers appeared again and she didn’t deny it. She inspected the tag. “I have a bad feeling about this one.”
“What’s wrong with it?”
“It’s from Zach and Ami, and it’s Zach’s handwriting on the tag.”
“So?”
“The message says ‘have fun’.”
Mamoru plucked it out of his wife’s hands and engaged in his standard gift investigation procedure (poking and shaking).
“Stop that.” Usagi went to grab it, but he kept it out of reach.
“I doubt there’s anything delicate in here.” He tried squeezing. “I think it might be a pair of socks.”
She stopped trying to reach and tilted her head slightly in thought. “It’s too thick.”
“Maybe it’s a few pairs of socks?”
She yanked it out of his hands and hit him with it over his head, ripping the paper slightly. When she noticed it she glared at him. “Look what you made me do.”
“Well open it up then, there’s more to unwrap.” Mamoru, it appeared, also turned into a giant child at Christmas. She obliged though, noticing that whatever was in there was bright red. Her trepidation grew. She ripped off the paper and held out what at first appeared to be a chopped up red Christmas stocking with a white fuzzy trim.
“What the heck is that?” Mamoru asked as Usagi held it up.
Slowly she started to notice things about it. Like the fact that one piece had wiring in it, and was round and strappy in places. And another piece of red cloth was stretchy and looked more like Y-fronts. “I- I think it’s his and her Christmas underwear.”
He pulled at what appeared to be white fluff with red string attached. “I think you’re right.” He pulled it out to reveal its shape. “Is this a Mrs Clause G-string?”
“Oh my God it is! I can’t believe Ami let him get this!”
He pulled the underwear in another direction. “There’s another gift from them under the tree, it felt like a book. Is this meant to cover anything?”
“What worries me more is how he knew my bra size.” Usagi wondered aloud as she examined the tag.
“I’m not. It’s Zach, I would have been surprised if he hadn’t known.” He held up the g-string, “Seriously, why bother wearing anything? I floss my teeth with more.”
Usagi eyed him up, wondering why he was playing with it so much. “You’re imagining me wearing that, aren’t you?”
His response was an unequivocal “Yes.”
“Well I’m not trying it on unless you put on the y-fronts and the Santa hat.”
Mamoru thought about it for a second, reasoning that there was no-one around but his wife, and her camera was safely stowed away upstairs. “We need to crack open the Dom then. Give me those.”
Her mouth hung open as he grabbed the underwear and catapulted the g-string, successfully whacking her in the face with it. “Hey!” Put he was too far away for her to hit him since he was making his way into the kitchen to fetch the champagne glasses.
“Hey, you reckon the hot pot’s done?”
“Check the oven!” Usagi called out as she started stripping, not quite believing what she was doing. “You might need to lower the heat.”
She heard a pop as Mamoru opened the bottle, coming in a few moments later with a pair of glasses filled with bubbly. “I think it needs another five minutes.” He handed her one. “You know on second thought, I’m not so sure I like the idea of you wearing underwear another man gave you.”
“Well, Ami had her name on the tag too, so I’m thinking she gave me mine and Zach gave you the, uh, banana hammock.”
Mamoru seemed to accept that logic.
They clicked glasses in a toast and drank some of their champagne. He looked down at her half naked form, his mouth watering (and not from the alcohol). “How about we dispense with the undies altogether?”
Usagi slipped on the g-string and adjusted the bra straps. “The deal was you wear it too.”
Mamoru sighed, taking a long gulp and placing his glass on a side table. He dropped trow and slipped on the y-fronts. “What do you think?” He did an experimental wiggle.
Usagi did her best to keep a serious face, “Sexy.”
“Not as much as you are.”
She twirled for him, showing off her (practically) bare backside. “You really think so?” She took her hair out of the messy bun she'd had it in and teased it a little, letting it flow down her back in platinum blonde waves.
Blue Christmas was playing in the background, so he cocked his lip up and tossed his hair, putting on his best Elvis voice, “You’re one sexy mamma.” He swaggered towards her, thrusting his hips as her approached.
Usagi lost it at that point, doubling over with laughter. Her eyes shone and her whole body shook, including her ample cleavage. “You’re not so bad yourself in those.” She managed to say before dissolving again into another fit.
“Well thank you very much.” He said, still deep in his impersonation.
She swallowed down her entire glass of champagne, spluttering some of it out as giggles escaped.
“You realise you’re supposed to drink that slowly, right?”
She placed the glass on the table. “You want to recreate what happened last Christmas, don’t you?”
“What, the evil stares at Ceithin?” He said, smiling as he brought her close.
Her hand ran down his stomach, her finger grazing lightly. “No.” She drawled out with her eyelids drooped. "Guess again."
"Ami getting tipsy on whiskey?"
Usagi shook her head, looking into his eyes as she bit her lip lightly.
“You haven’t even opened all your gifts,” he whispered as his lips dipped into the crevice under her ear.
“They can wait.” She moaned out, arching her head back and lifting her right leg, wrapping it around his waist.
Things became more explicit after that.
Her negligee was pushed aside for easy access while his was removed completely. He only wore them for a few minutes, Usagi thought in passing, but her brain lost all ability to think soon after.
Somehow Mamoru's Santa hat managed to stay on his head (which was a tribute to the hat makers since they managed to get pretty creative).
And that was how they were found by the others: in the middle of things and nowhere near done.
The heated couple had lost track of time, and had not realised that it was six o’clock, which meant that Ceithin, Mina, Zach and Ami would let themselves into the flat for drinks after ringing the doorbell and receiving no answer. "They're probably sleeping," Mina had reasoned, "Mamoru had the night shift yesterday didn't he?"
Usagi noticed them staring first, and her resulting scream was what alerted Mamoru. In all honesty she wasn’t too exposed since Mamoru was on top and therefore covered most of her body, but that didn’t stop her from being completely mortified. Mamoru, on the other hand, was considerably less protected.
“Nice ass.” Mina commented through a half-hearted attempt to hide her face with her hands. Ceithin and Ami had to decency to look away, although Ami’s face was practically purple.
Zach had a gigantic smile on his face and was nudging Ami with his elbow. “Didn’t I tell you they’d like it?”
“GET OUT!” Mamoru managed to yell.
“Fine. But I smell something burning.”
Mamoru was too embarrassed to care. “OUT!”
