Walking home for my workout today (thus having an excess of oxygen to my brain), and seeing what seemed like a fairly androngynous straight couple (from how they looked under those bulky winter clothes), it got me thinking. This is all very unacademic, so forgive me.
If someone asks me, I'll say I'm straight, because for all practical purposes, I am. However, I am quite fond of the idea that all humans are, in essence, bisexual. It seems most facts point to that conclusion, as I see it.
Firstly, there are two basic reasons why humans have sex:
1. Procreation.
2. Pleasure/intimacy/power (etc). (Technically, these are several reasons, I know, but I group them together in that they are not procreation.)
I'm sure there are some people out there who really, seriously, only have sex to procreate. However, most humans have sex for the second reasons as well, sometimes both reasons apply at the same time, sometimes not. To make babies you need two people of the opposite sex, and procreation is a rather basic genetic/biological drive for humanity as a species. So choosing a partner of the opposite sex in order to spread your genes makes perfect sense. That leads to the question why a majority of humans choose a partner of the opposite sex for the second reasons, since it's really not necessary. Once you have children, or decided you don't want them, can't have them etc, your reason for having sex is just for pleasure or intimacy (let's forget for the moment those more sinister reasons). What is it about a woman, for example, a man finds attractive? Breasts? Vagina? Curves? Hair? Skin? Those motherly, nuturing qualities we all supposedly have? If a woman is androgynous (however you'd define that word), is the man who wants to have sex with her not completely straight? Or does that biological imperative to procreate completely determine who we're attracted to (for the 'straight' part of the population)? Is it simply just easier - for cultural reasons - to choose a straight partner? Thus getting both the procreation and pleasure in one person. If you choose a same sex partner and still feel the urge to spread your genes, it gets more complicated, doesn't it? Unless you're willing to have a polygamous relationship, of course.
What this all boils down to is, if both men and women could have children, would there still be a supposedly 90% straight population and 10% gay? I think so. I think it would look decidely different.
And I SWEAR this has nothing to do with Jared's marriage. Although come to think of it ... if Jensen could have Jared's babies, would THEY be married now? *g*
And here's part two of the exciting countdown of my personal one-hit wonders: The Von Bondies - C'mon C'mon
This song is so full of explosive energy that it never fails to make me happy and want to just jump up and down like an idiot. It's also very short and to the point, which is brilliant. It's like an momentary outburst of frustration, anger and happiness at the same time. Completely brilliant.
This was the best video I could find, I'm afraid.
