How to save the world

It's been busy lately, so no much time for LJ-socialising. But this is now my last week at work before my four week vacation. Yay! Apart from my previously mentioned trip to London and the south of Sweden, I'm also going to Finland. Good stuff.

I have finally had time to see all of Torchwood and I thought it was pretty good, if rather depressing. A lot depressing, in fact. Like all of you, I was very, very sad to see Ianto go. I was kind of hoping against hope that he wasn't really dead, for a long while, but alas. No one is as sad as Captain Jack, though. ::sniff::
I've never taken Torchwood or Doctor Who as serious television, in the way where I analyse the story, the characters and their choices. I've always taken it as pure entertainment. And as such, I judge it on whether I find it entertaining or not.

Children of Earth was definitely very, very entertaining. But it was also surprisingly dark and creepy (what IS creepier than children either being killed or doing the killing?) And not really so much about Torchwood, as it was about the failures of a government; the mistrust of governments and their leaders was immense, here. I thought the "morality" of the tale was actually quite interesting and the choices these people made, out of fear, out of cowardice, were almost thought-provoking in their extremity. That goes for the choice Captain Jack did, as well; sacrificing his grandson for the sake of millions of other kids. I suppose it could be said that any other person, without his perspective on things, from his long life, would not be able to do such a thing. That makes him a very interesting character, indeed. More so than before. His dark sides give him a previously missing depth. So that was quite interesting. And I hope we'll see more of him, even if Torchwood is in ruins. Jack Barrowman seems prepared to be Captain Jack for as long as he can, at least. And I LOVE Russell T Davies, and I'm watching anything he does.

To sum up: booh! for Ianto (dear, sweet Ianto) but YAY! for the whole series.

While I was sick, I had the time to catch up a bit on my big bang reading, but now I'm behind again. I had some plan to tell you which ones I've read so far that I liked the best, but I don't have time for that, so instead I'm reccing one non-big bang and the big bang I've most recently read:
- The night could just bend on forever by ampersands. A non-AU (yay!), post-SPN story about the Js on road tripping a slowly discovering something new. Just perfect.
- To Teach the Human Heart the Knowledge of Itself" by apreludetoanend. J2 AU, where they're doing charity theatre. I have such love for grumpy, oblivious Jensen and overwhelmingly puppy-like Jared. More sarcastic!Jensen, please! :)

That's all I have. Adieu.

recs, torchwood
