What to do...

What to do, what to do…

I have a job interview this afternoon.

I am posting this entry early, because the truth is that I don’t know enough about the job to be making an informed decision yet, but my mind is still racing. Here’s what I do know, in terms of pros and cons:

NEW JOB:

Pros: it is true social work; I would be supervised by a social worker; it is work directly with my community; it is a beautiful setting; it is case management and so I would not be chained to a desk; no weekends or holidays

Cons: the top end of the job is 35k a full 7k less than I make now, no retirement contribution

CURRENT JOB:

Pros: I created the position so I am excellent at it; I get a lot of notoriety for what I do; I am afforded a lot of creativity in my position; I have a good relationship with my director; I am very comfortable with where I am at; decent money; county job- good benefits; great retirement; comfortable with peers and other staff

Cons: Weekend work every 5 weeks and rotating holidays; expected to do things that are not my job position simply because I am higher educated; morale is AWFUL and people are mostly bitter and miserable; Getting anything changed or accomplished is a fight, requiring multiple write ups and meetings and complete justification of your reasoning (remember I work for lawyers!); management is dysfunctional and there is one particular manager who does nothing but focus on the negative and brings everyone way down; burnt out on the work itself

I am torn as to what to do. Leaving the county is huge and is not a decision to make lightly. I know very little about the potential new job yet, so I am not in a place to be even thinking about anything seriously, but I know that whatever the job is, it’s social work/case management and in terms of the work itself, it’s pretty standard. Small details would be different here and there, but case management is case management. I am trying to weigh the pros and cons of each job and am very conflicted.

What would you do? I am assuming that the pay will be less, yet given the list of pros and cons, I am wondering if the pay cut would be worth it. I initially mentally rejected the job outright because of the money, but now I am not so sure that is such a hot idea.

What are your thoughts? Anyone?

I will post again after the interview with more details and ask for more feedback, but initially, what are your thought?
