What Was Said About Jonah In Father Mapple's Sermon Makes Sense

Jan 15, 2010 17:41

To Pray or not to pray or when to pray--
when you wish to repent, there is a conflict
interestingly put, in some parts I agreed,
after reading the sermon one day
of Father Mapple in Moby Dick.

It was a question of how to receive
God's punishment for your sin.

I will not recite all his words, but this :
“Sin not, but if you do, repent of it like Jonah.”

What was his sin is not clear to me
I have not read the Bible or of Jonah and his whale;
Father Mapple lays it out plain he did not heed
the words of God until it was too late.

Punishment. When the hardness of that face
turned to him, Jonah believed, but did not pray
instead he felt he deserved the conviction and to pay
it without a prayer for mercy, and this God praised
in his repentant spirit, more than anything.
