We didn’t go to the state fair every year, but we went a lot of years. Being from Detroit, and with a dad who worked for Chrysler, we always had to stop at the pavilions of the various auto companies and collect brochures. I remember so well the barker. My friend and I chanted, "You gotta come see her, you gotta come see her! You gotta come see the big, fat, momma!" I'm sure we were waiting in line for a ride as this fellow said it over and over again, using various inflections along the way. Needless to say, we never saw her.

As far as the tents, I recall walking past one that had an opening near its back. I remember a stuffy stench, dim-lighting, and dispair ; also guilt since dad wanted us nowhere near there!
