You, opinionated? No way! ;) Okay, you may be opinionated, but you are *always* respectful. You always have been that way with me, and that's one reason I admire you and the way you carry yourself.

My line between acquaintances and friends pretty much runs together, and that is one reason I get myself in trouble (meaning, getting my feelings hurt) sometimes. It's the majority of my cyber-space friends (minus a few) who I have little in common with. But when it comes down to it, I feel someone is a good person with a good heart, then I consider that person a friend.

As for "real life" friends, if I were 100% passionate about something and had a good friend who wasn't, that's fine - as long as the friend was respectful of my passion. If a friend knew I was passionate about a hobby, and said friend was continually making remarks such as "why do you waste your time doing that?" or snide remarks layered in sarcasm that included "you must have a lot of time on your hands", then I'd say that person wasn't respectful of my passion. Why in the world would I want to spend any amount of time with someone like that? On the flip side, if the person enjoys my passion as much as I do but is trying to continually make it a competition, then I want no part of that either.

I have some friends I have lots of things in common with, and some I have little in common with, but to me they are friends on the same level. Those I have little in common with are the ones I learn from, and that broadens my outlook on lots of things. They are the ones that help me grow and learn. But if there is no tolerance from either regarding certain areas of the other's life, then I don't think that could work.

Sorry about the major digress, here. :)

I thought that was helpful. I think you are on to something there with your note that respectfulness is key. It has to go both ways, though!
