The breeze tickling his ears is what woke Winston to the smell of earth and green things. A glass bottle glinted wickedly in his view as he pushed himself up with effort.

When did it become so difficult to get up, he asked himself and noticed that he sprawled with only his front paws wedging him up. Wait! Paws!

It was a hoarse cry of a meow that came from his mouth in disbelief.

I do not have paws and I don’t meow and why is it so hard to get up?

An ache in his tummy heralded unpleasant things and he rolled up, gathering legs under himself so as not to heave up vomit onto his body and saw furry legs; his white, dirt stained, furred legs.

“You’ll be okay in a bit,” an amused voice told him. “It takes a while for the effects of stuff like that stuff to wear off.”

Oh… right, Winston put things together. The party. A party that had been put about on the internet. The ultimate Halloween Party to end all parties with wizards and magic, it had said. Who knew wizards and magic were real? He’d blamed it on really great special effects and that was before someone had given him a bottle of something and told him to drink. He was as stupidly naïve as Alice in Fucking Wonderland.

“Now, now. Don’t go wandering there,” said the voice, “tummy settled?”

A hand gripped the back of Winston’s neck and yes there is a reflex that freezes kittens and cats into immobility. He managed a low growl at the treatment as he dangled in air with only a pair of brown tweed pant legs to watch from his vantage point as they walked across a wasteland of dirt and sparse green grass. After a while he had to shut his eyes, his tummy did not like watching the Earth move under someone else’s feet.

“I promise your tummy will feel better and whoever did this will be punished. Whether or not we can get you back to being fully human, I’m not sure. We might have to settle for feline familiar-kin. The pregnancy,” there was a feel as if of shrugging.
“Until then,” Winston was lifted higher and a finger delicately put on his nose to get him to open his eyes and into the face the voice came from, “Welcome to one of the Wizards’‘Verse’s most lauded Academies and an education like you never imagined.”
