Chapter 1 continues from here Countryside blurred by in a sweep of lush green fields, intermittently dotted with copses of trees. Archie’s family abode, judging by how far out they were, must be as reclusive as the burrow, a burrow no matter that Archie termed his home a nest. Penn speculated it too might be underground taking advantage of the soil’s ambient heat and while I’m wondering, are Archie’s parents were-kin like Archie?
Rolling his head against the glass to look at his lover, Penn opened his mouth to ask and then closed it.
“What?”
“How did you know that ….? You’re driving! Eyes. Road.” Penn agitatedly motioned towards the roadway ahead.
“They’re not as noticeable when I’m in human form, but I still have more than one set of eyes,” he moved the hair off his forehead and sure enough there was an eye peaking out. “Makes for better attention to driving conditions especially in high traffic areas.” Archie grinned, “my auto insurance premiums are really low.”
“Huh,” Penn subsided back against the seat.
“So what were you going to ask me and thought better of it?”
Swallowing, “are your parents were-spiders too? Are there any spiderlings still in the nest that I have to be careful around?”
With a grin Archie brushed his hair back into position, “My mom is the spider in the house and no, no siblings in residence at the moment. Holidays might be different, but I didn’t think you wanted to be exposed to la famille en mass. I’m the only one who’s going to be eating you if anybody does.” The grin got bigger, “We’re really quite civilized, no stealing other people’s food or mates.”
“So I don’t have to worry about nibbling then. Even from the little ones?” he asked doubtfully.
“No nieces or nephews yet. You’ll be the first spider-mate brought home. Mom would eat anyone of us if we had spiderlings with a non-mate and then she’d steal the littles to raise them properly. She’s maternal like that.”
“We can’t give them any grandkids; that going to be a problem?” Great just what he needed, to invent more things to worry about during the family inspection.
Archie smiled a complacent smile at the roadway as he drove, “Won’t be a problem, Mom knows .” He snickered, “And things happen.”
“WHAT?” Penn turned full in his seat to stare at Archie.
“You’ll look cute all round bellied,” was said with a unconcerned manner before Archie spoiled it grinning. “It’ll be fine. Both my parents will love you because you love me and I love you. It’ll be a love fest in the nest.”
“O-kay.” Penn turned back to the window, “but if my tummy gets big and round, I’m the one going to be eating you.”
“Wouldn’t have it any other way,” Archie said. “Now stop worrying about spiderlings and start worrying about if you can keep quiet while I’m eating you tonight in my old bedroom, with my parents just down the hall.”
“Oh shit.”
