With a sharp cry of, “Noooooo,” Ardnel collapsed against the wall before flinging himself towards the tree screaming, “Give him back! You can’t have him! Dallyn! Dallyn!” Officer Maitland caught him just in time where Ardnel struggled briefly to crumple into unattractive nose running weeping.

“What’s going on here?!” came a voice from the front doorway. “Oh hell, where’s Ardnel?” was more worriedly asked. “ARDIE?”

A heavy thud made an interesting sound of breaking glass amongst the crinkle of plastic bag. “Ardie, are you all right?” was asked into the transferred teary mess that was Ardnel.

“You’re alive. You’re okay. The tree didn’t eat you,” was punctuated by kisses.

“Tree?” Dallyn looked around at the police officers who’d invaded his home, taking in the one in the chair currently bleeding into it and then looked at the tree.

“I’m going to kill him,” was said in a low menacing voice, “he said that Blackwoods trees were safe during the winter because they went dormant.”

“And who would that be Mr.?”

“Dallyn Aghdashloo. I’m Dallyn Aghdashloo. My co-worker, Auroch. Malikai Auroch is the one who told me about finding a tree for Christmas up in the Blackwoods. Said that they needed to be thinned out and they were free for the cutting. I didn’t think he’d kill to get the account. It’s Christmas.”

“We’ll be wanting to speak to him. Where did you say your place of employment was Mr. Aghdashloo?” The book was open and the pencil poised.

It was hours before the crime scene would be processed and Dallyn and Ardnel were told to gather what they needed to go stay with relatives. Tenderly ushering Ardie out and into the car, Dallyn snapped in the seatbelt around him before going to his side of the car and driving away from his home.

In a more jolly tone, “So which relative should we go stay at?” Dallyn asked.

“First we need to go to Aunt Tammy’s and let her know that she’s a widow. Maybe we could stay there because I doubt she wants to be with her relatives since we’re all in mourning. She is expecting us.” Ardie said.

“Aunt Tammy’s it is then. That was a very good idea about the tree. Worked like a charm. I’ll have no problem getting the account now.”

“Oh I can’t claim the credit. It was Aunt Tammy’s idea,” Ardie said wiping his eyes and blowing his nose.
