“Drat!” She followed up with a hand cradling her forehead, “He called me his mate while he was poked up out of the summoning circle trap.”

The Liaison twisted his chair around with a smile. “Oh that does make things easier. If Ezz is willing to claim you as his mate then that’s one problem we don’t have to deal with. It won’t be a case of just seduce and release,” he coughed into his fist. “Sorry. That one was too good to not share,” he grinned. “Release. Get it. Don’t worry you will and love it, speaking from experience.”

Carefully she set the bottle of Starbucks Coffee Mocha down so as not to spill it on the book she was reading. The Liaison had warned her about taking extreme care with any of his books she decided to peruse while she waited for him to research her case. She didn’t want to think about what Associating with Demons and their Magic hyped up on coffee and chocolate might be capable of doing. Placing the book even more carefully on the chair she had just left, she set her hands more carefully still on the Liaison’s desk that didn’t have any computer equipment on it.

“Now look,” she calmly spoke through clenched teeth. “Regardless of his intentions, they aren’t my intentions. I don’t know him, anything about who he is other than his being a demon. Is he a good person that in 5 years, 20 years, 50 years, 150 years, I will still be able to say ‘this is my mate, it was the best day of my life when he claimed me’? Or, in 2 days will I be looking for sharp pointed objects to kill him with?”

The Liaison’s eyes had rounded slightly at the last part. “Maybe I should be more concerned for the welfare of the demon.” He made a hunt through one of the desk drawers and pulled out what looked like a dull black stone plaque. “Here, put your hand on this and hold it there ‘til it changes color.”

“What if it doesn’t change color and why am I doing this?”

“It will change color and you’ll just have to keep your hand on it until it does,” his smile had teeth in it. “It won’t release your hand until it does,” he shrugged

“Oh really,” she picked her hand up leaving the plaque its same dull black. “Doesn’t look any different to me.”

“Your wizard genes!” The Liaison slammed his hand down on a different plaque, “Xand! I need you.”

A figure moved through a frosted glass door on the other side of the room, through the actual glass that had turned from frosted to clear.

“You called, Love? What does my snuggle bunny want and how does he want it? Desk or chair?”

The Liaison seemed to melt as he was totally enfolded in his demon’s arms, his body hidden. There was the ripping of cloth and then she noticed that the Liaison’s chair had no arms on it as the demon sat in it settling his mate onto his lap and proceeded to raise him and lower him, trying different angles. The Liaison whimpered and moaned into extended slow kisses, his fingers digging into the strong shoulders under his hands.

She coughed and then coughed again. “Excuse me?” got no better attention to her being in the room. It was getting warm in the room, she could feel it rising in her body and it occurred to her that there was a small courtyard on the other end of the entryway corridor from where she’d entered. It seemed like a very good idea to give the Liaison time to confer with his mate. ‘That’s what I’m doing, I’m giving them time to confer,’ she told herself as she let herself out of the Liaison office.

“You’re flushed.”

“What .. How can you be here?”

“This is protected neutral space. I can be here but I can’t grab you up and take you with me unless you voluntarily accept me.”

“Oh. Is the courtyard on the other end of this walkway also neutral space?” she asked scanning over the face and body of the demon that until now she hadn’t had the interest to examine.

“Not really but we can agree that it is.” There was a note of persuasive hope in his voice.

“I am willing to agree that it be protected, neutral space free of my being subject to abduction.”

“Then I so agree, but I reserve the right to try to persuade you to be my mate.”

“Persuade?”

“Persuade, seduce,” he shrugged. “You’re a great temptation and your presence called to me even across the planes. I completely forgot my early classes in mate hunting.”

“They teach classes in that, mate hunting? Really?”

Ezz smiled, “Really. We tend to want to take and cajole after. That isn’t the best way or so the older more experienced and mated instructors teach.”

“Hmm. The sun is shining with puffy white clouds to provide some shade. There’s a table and chairs. We can talk.”

He nodded. “Before that though, can we seal our agreement with a kiss, here on the Liaison’s office doorstep with its restraining influence?”

“The Liaison is not such a good example of restraint right now. He and his demon mate are enjoying a good chair and each other.”

“That happens.”

“They were quite involved.” She felt her face heat.

“Come, let’s go sit and talk,” he took her hand and walked them out towards the courtyard. He stopped before exiting through the archway turning her and lightly kissing her lips before deepening it when she didn’t pull away.
