While I was out today, I found a free pattern to make a crochet monkey. A faux sock monkey, if you will. Considering that my attempt to make a sock monkey out of, y'know, socks, failed miserably - I'm hoping this will work instead. I think the primary reason my previous attempt failed is that I sadly cannot sew. I've always wanted to learn, but I can only make very clumsy attempts at handsewing things and I can't work a machine. So sock monkey did not work out at all.
I have been doing some looking into how to restore my dollhouse - it seems like it won't be too hard, considering the wood is still solid and I have almost all the pieces. I'll just need to glue the interior dividers back in place, and nail new columns onto the porch. My brother said he would help me cut and shape the wood for the columns and do the carpentry part, which is good. I'm even worse with nails and hammers than I am with sewing. That doesn't stop me from trying, though. I'm going to remove the shingles from the porch roof (which is currently detached) and use them to reshingle the bare spots on the roof proper. The siding on the exterior of the house is primarily good, though there are a couple of places where the paint is a bit chipped. I will try to match the paint if I can so that I don't have to repaint the whole thing - it's a nice shade of blue anyhow. Then I have to put in doors and windows and wallpaper and the like. I would like to try and put in electric wiring, but I've examined some of the tiny wiring kits and I think I might have to ask my brother to do that job too.
I got a book from the library today about a girl who gets the clap from a soldier in 1917. Yes, there's more to the story than that, but it's pretty much the driving plot element. It's a good story, interesting characters too. And it has the added bonus of being the first story I've ever read with a venerial disease in it outside of those 'don't do this kids' publications in health class way back. The name of the book is Charity Girl, and the author is Michael Lowenthal if you want to look it up.
