We had a good time hanging out with Rick! We went to Batsto and took some pictures at the Nature Center, then went swimming. Had some lunch, and then went to meet up with Agnes (
autumn_snows). We played some Apples to Apples in the Barnes and Nobel, then went to hang at the video store and kinda veg while Rick played some Magic:The Gathering in the tournament they were having there.
At the bookstore, I picked up some books that I hope will help me jumpstart my story - though I figured that part of the problem I am having is my inability to say 'this just works'. I want to understand what is causing the dimensional rift in the story- -and I know that it happens because of the music, which means that I want to understand music theory. The only problem is that music theory is like a foreign language to me, because I have very little concept of the technical aspects of music since I'm not a musician and I can't really play any instruments or anything. I asked Ryen about it, and he pointed me in the direction of
Phyrgian mode , which is a fascinating read to me though it stretches my limits of understanding. Modes and tones seem to be a good way to explain what's going on -but in order for me to accurately describe this, I need to grasp it at least partially. I don't want to scrap the story idea because my limited knowledge is getting in the way of telling it.
I have also decided that this will very much be a story of perspectives. I think I am going to make it a first person story- but from many different points of view. In some cases, we will be looking at the same scene several times as told by the different characters who are participating in it. I might also weave into this some sub-tales about what's going on in the dimensional rifts, though those will be third person- told as they are observed from the outside.
I have decided that Mitch is the magic man- it is through him that the dimensional rifts are occurring. Unusually, for being a drummer, he is also a songwriter and composer. It's him that's making the music that's propelling the band . The lead singer, Simon, is a charismatic older performer who had a flash of fame followed by a period of fading into 'you know, that guy who sang that one song back when' - and Mitch is his chance to get back on top. In a way, he exploits Mitch I think, but more out of desperation than cruelty.
The rest of the story is still not so clear. But I'm pretty sure I want to write this, despite the complexity. If I dither around with it long enough, it might become my NaNo project. But I'm really hoping to get started way before then. That's a last ditch effort. Besides,Greyhound would make a much better project for that, or even the Tequila Sunset sequel that's mostly planned out in my head. Tequila Sunset seemed to do well.
Oh yeah ,and one of these days, I still need to figure out how to get myself an agent so I can make something of this writing - the novel, and the short story collection. It's a shame for them to be still sitting here and collecting dust.
Also, the music rift thingy story needs a name - even if it's only a temporary one- so I can stop referring to it as 'that story about the, you know'. Since i'm listening to this new Rilo Kiley song Dreamworld, and I first thought of the circumstances in a dream - for now, it's called project Dreamworld. Hooray for arbitrary naming.
