Checking SPN dialogue from season 4

Nov 26, 2009 14:46

I'm rewatching Season Four for an article I'm writing tentatively called "Faithful demons and atheist angels: religious themes in Supernatural".

I thought I'd stick some of the exchanges I want to refer to here in case any of you have the time to check them for me.

Castiel: I'm the one you gripped you tight and raised you from Perdition.
Dean: Who are you?
Castiel: Castiel.
Dean: Yeah, I figured that. I meant, what are you?
Castiel: I'm an angel of the Lord.
Dean: Get the hell out of here. There's no such thing.
Castiel: This is your problem, Dean. You have no faith.
(His wings unfurl as black shadows seen in blinding light.)
...
Dean: And why would an angel rescue me from Hell?
Castiel: Good things do happen, Dean.
Dean: Not in my experience.
Castiel. What's the matter? You don't think you deserve to be saved.
Dean: Why'd you do it?
Castiel: Because God commanded it. Because we have work for you.

Dean: Okay, say it's true. Say there are angels. Then what? There's a god?
Bobby: At this point, Vegas money's on yeah.
Dean: I don't know, guys.
Sam: (excited) I know you're not all choirboy about this stuff, but this is becoming less and less about faith and more and more about proof.
Dean: Proof that there's a god out there that actually gives a crap about me personally? I'm sorry, but I'm not buying it.
Sam: Why not?
Dean: Because, why me? If there is a god out there why would he give a crap about me? I mean, I've saved some people, okay. I've figured that made up for all the stealing and the ditching chicks. But why do I deserve to get saved? I mean, I'm just a regular guy.
Sam: Well, apparently you're a regular guy who's important to the man upstairs.
Dean: Well, that creeps me out. I mean, I don't like getting singled out at birthday parties, much less by God.
Sam: Well, too bad, Dean. Because I think he wants you to strap on your party hat.
...
Dean: See, this is why I can't get behind God. If he doesn't exist, fine. Bad crap happens to good people. That's just how it is. No rhyme or reason, just random horrible evil, I get it. I can roll with that. But if he is out there? What's wrong with him? Where the hell is he while all these decent people are getting torn to shreds? How does he live with himself, you know, why doesn't he help?
(Dean and Sam look at Bobby.)
Bobby: I ain't touching this one with a ten-foot pole.
...
Dean: I thought angels were supposed to be guardians. Fluffy wings, halos, Michael Landon. Not dicks.
Castiel: Read the Bible. Angels are warriors of God. I'm a soldier.
...
Dean: By the way, while all this is going on, where the hell's your boss? If there is a god.
Castiel: There's a God.
Dean: I'm not convinced. 'Cos if there's a god, what the hell is he waiting for. Genocide. Monsters roaming the earth. The freakin' apocalypse. At what point does he lift a damn finger and help the poor bastards that are stuck down here?
Castiel: The Lord works in ...
Dean: You say "mysterious ways" so help me I will kick your ass.
(Castiel shrugs and is silent.)
