In the background--a prevalent, unending tick tick tick tick tick, perhaps a seconds hand ticking away on an old pocketwatch.
Tick
And a table, elegantly set, tea and cakes and minor treats scattered carefully across. It was an elegant tea party, but the chairs were all empty.
Tick
Except for two.
In one chair, Break sat, unconcerned expression mirrored by his posture, legs crossed and one arm slung around the back of the chair. His tea cup sat, untouched, on its saucer.
Tick
In the other...? A mouse--no, a rat, seated primly in the chair, paws brushing a tea cup in front of it.
Tick
A pause. Break tsk'd. "Rats hardly belong at the table." A whimsical comment.
Tick
The rat seemed amused, if a rat could. It leaned against the table, a definite smirk on its mousey face, and stared back with mismatched eyes--red and gold.
Tick
There was a long pause, nothing but the ticking of the clock in the background. And then Break leaned over, cup of tea in hand, and poured it over the rat's head.
Tock.
