July 21, 2003 -- Want a clear complexion next college spring break? Try skipping your exams.

You might flunk out. But you might look better. Exam stress makes acne worse, says a report in the July issue of The Archives of Dermatology.

Alexa B. Kimball, MD, MPH, and colleagues at California's Stanford University studied 12 female and seven male university students. They rated the students' acne about a month before exams, three days before an exam, and seven days after an exam. They also measured the students' stress levels.

"Patients with acne may experience worsening of the disease during examinations," the researchers conclude. "Furthermore, changes in acne severity correlate highly with increasing stress, suggesting that emotional stress from external sources may have a significant influence on acne."

The students also told the Kimball's team how they felt about their eating habits during exams. Those who said they had the worst diets had the worst acne flare-ups. But diet didn't affect acne as much as stress.

This probably means that skipping exams won't really help your acne. Flunking out would probably be a lot more stressful than a few tests.

Here's a better strategy. If exams make you tense, learn a few simple relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing and positive imagery. Use them while studying and while taking your exams. You might get better grades. And you might just look better, too.
