So, we moved to Colorado.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE it here. The weather is great, the people are friendly, there are brew pubs all over, traffic is nothing, and THE MOUNTAINS! I don't think I'll ever get tired of the mountains. 2-3 days a week we've been taking hikes through city parks, which have world class views, and are just gorgeous.
I miss my friends, but having moved several times, I know that we'll be making more friends here, and will still keep in touch with people back east. I'm hoping that we can set ourselves up in an affordable enough lifestyle that flying back for MTA or something won't be out of the question.
It's weird, feeling like I *really* like where we live. DC was never really a choice, per se. It's where Jeff worked, and that's where we needed to be. Now, he's been attending training for other skills, skills which had featured in job opportunities in other areas I'd looked at before. He could be much more in demand after this job, with his new skills. But I don't care. I'm happy here.
We're in a small apartment for now. We have a signed offer on our house in Maryland, it closes end of August if all goes well. We have a contract on a house here, just south of the Air Force Academy, which is getting inspected this afternoon, and will close early September, if all goes well. It will be *really* good to be back in a house again.
The boys are all registered in school in the new neighborhood, which has an International Baccalaureate program. It's also got a great playground, so they're thrilled beyond belief. I've chatted with people at the school on the phone, and they're incredibly friendly (just like everybody else around here). We have a tour scheduled for Monday morning.
My school is a little complicated. I was accepted into the nursing program at Southern MD to start this fall for an associates degree. University of Colorado - Colorado Springs has an accelerated BSN program that I qualify for, but I wouldn't be able to start until summer of 2015, and it would be intense. Alternatively, I have to take just a couple more pre-reqs, and start the standard BSN program in fall of 2014, it'll be pretty much part time, and I'll be able to finish in just one more semester. AND have summers off.
So I'm signed up for a chemistry course at the local community college, but man, is out of state tuition expensive! $2500 for a 5 credit course. At UCCS, it would be about $5000. Ugh. I'm on the waiting list back at SoMD to take another pre-req that I can do online - for $800 instead of $1500.
So, that's where we're at. I REALLY missed Pennsic this year, especially since we were supposed to be part of a new and pretty encampment. Next year! SCA is pretty much the only medieval game in town, so we'll probably be spending more time with that than we did in Atlantia. We haven't been to any events yet, but we've been to many fight practices and armoring nights, and people are pretty cool. I could write a whole post about SCA participation theory, but that will have to wait. :-)
