Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke's plans to make a supernatural version of Hamlet have hit the skids after she encountered problems financing the movie.
Hardwicke, who also helmed Red Riding Hood, had intended to cast Emile Hirsch in a scary, modern-day take on the Shakespeare play.
But she admitted it had been a "difficult" film to get off the ground.
"This is one of those difficult ones, pushing the rock up the hill," she said at the Step Up Women's Network Inspiration Awards. "We're looking for financiers to get excited about it."
She added: "Any difficult project, when it doesn't fit the superhero norm, then you have a challenge to get it made."
