Genre: chick lit
Who are the main characters? (from left to right) Sam, a kindergarten aid who is spending her free time studying law and who speaks fluent French and Spanish; Kirsten, who does nails at the local salon, majored in accessorizing with a minor in hair styling; Flo, a secretary at the dental office who makes a mean lasagna; and (not shown) Alicia, voted class knockout in their high school with a talent for getting out of trouble
What is the story about? This story follows the relationships of the four women as they go through various crises in their lives
What has happened in the story before this scene began? Alicia called her friends to let them know she's pregnant, and coming home from overseas to give birth on American soil; they decide to plan a surprise baby shower for her
What will happen afterwards? They will go and catch up on old times, and Alicia will have trouble deciding which one to choose for a godmother
Write 100 Words of the Scene: None of the three women were really paying attention to the concourse; they were too busy admiring the newest technique Kirsten had picked up at the Salon. “Drop dead gorgeous,” Flo pronounced.

“What?”

The voice was familiar - Alicia, in the enviably husky tones she'd cultivated about the same time she was angling for the title of “class knockout.” The woman, however, was decidedly not.

“Oh... my... God...” Flo said.

“Your hair! Your beautiful hair!” Kirsten moaned.

“What have you done with yourself?” Sam demanded.

“You like it?”

Alicia looked like a hooligan - like one of those guys that thought they were so tough, hanging out on the corners smoking dope. She had a silver hoop which would have made a sexy earring, except it was in her nose instead. Her hair - once the envy of the school for its luxuriant waves - was now standing straight up in a mohawk. If it hadn't been for the pregnant breasts and belly, she might have passed for one of those guys.

Sam, who had learned diplomacy on the battlefield known as her classroom full of kindergarteners, said, “It's... different.”

“Right.” Alicia turned her head, giving them a side view of the mohawk, and a glimpse of dark ink under the skin of her neck. “Makes me stand out.”
