August 5, 1967: Pink Floyd releases 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.' The album's title is a chapter from Kenneth Graham's book 'Wind In The Willows'. 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' reached no. 6 on the English top-20 album chart, and stayed there for seven weeks. The album was recorded in EMI Abbey Road Studios. Also recording at the time were The Beatles, who were recording their groundbreaking album 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.' When one Beatle heard the sounds of the Floyd from down the hall, he rushed back to his mates and said something like, "Hey there's this fantastic band down the hall stealing all our glory!" After which the Pink Floyd had a chance to meet their peers during the recording of The Beatles' song "Lovely Rita," at which time, 8 of the greatest musicians of all time stood in the same studio together, you know, just shooting the bull.
