No free Chipotle burrito last night. Not waiting in the rain. We were supposed to eat in the street at bonoTOGO, but the rain changed those plans to the adventure dining of going to the Rice Bowl on South High. I've been curious about it for years and have never been there. Obviously, neither had
lostpositive.
There were people there when we arrived. It's never a good sign to arrive at an empty resturant. It's old school Chinese, the type of place you went with your grandparents when they were in the rare mood of wanting something exotic. It's got a lot of space, and a koi tank that needs a cleaing. She had an egg roll to start, I had the won ton soup. Her egg roll was decent, the soup was quite good. Dense noodles and a clear unstarched broth. A good start.
I'm still not sure what her main course was, some sort of vegetable chow mein that was not what she expected. She said it was quite glutenous. I had the Singapore noodles and was looking for the pork that they said was in there. Plenty of mushrooms, which I gave to her, but the meat was missing. It should not be a game to look for the food you ordered, hidden in the noodles.
The food was not awful, but very overpriced.
She's been hankering for a milkshake so I figured we'd head over to Dan's Drive In so she could have that experience. Well, they had the root beer float I wanted but the waitress told us we had to wait for someone else to come back and make the shake because she did not know how to. Hell, I could have gone back there and did it. So the cook allegedly knew and showed her how it was done. We're sitting there, I could not bear to watch, and listening to the sounds of chocolate shake construction.
And they were sounds you would not ordinarily hear when one thinks of shake making.
I heard metal grinding on metal, wood cutting and I swear there was a table saw back there. What the hell were they doing?
Anyway, they could have given her anything (what would she know?) but it came out. No wood chips. She liked it. It was ok from the sample I had.
We got to writers block and I'm telling you, the bar has been raised. There were the regulars who had some great poems and some new people who came in and left some carnage on the stage. I've got about four poems in my head now and two weeks to assemble them.
Can I do it?
Got home just in time to hear Chris Bradley tell us that the tornado and imminent doom was on our street and that it was nice knowing us. Man, lots of lightning, a monsoon and tornado sirens going off all night. I hope no one got hurt and that folks have their power.
