Scout got all As on her report card. And five tardies, but whatever.
So because she is going through this entitled phase that makes me want to choke her, she asked if she could have a monetary reward for the good work. "So and so gets $10 for every A she gets and $5 for every B." It irks me because she has it pretty good here. I don't demand that she does that much around the house, other than pick up after herself and keep her room decent, because we tell her that her job is to go to school and work hard every day. We place a great importance on getting doing well academically. Anyway. I asked her, "Isn't the satisfaction of a job well done and the knowledge that your parents are proud of you enough?" Guess not.
I told her that her reward can be all the spare change we have accumulated in various jars around the house. Today she accompanied me to Kroger and we threw the hoard of pennies, dimes, nickles, and quarters into the Coinstar machine.
$118.75
I was expecting $30 or so. Not well over a hundred.
I guess I should have taken the initiative months ago to do that myself. But now she has some cash and can put into practice my lessons in saving your damn money. Hopefully my husband's "if you want it, buy it!" attitude has not become her default mode already.
