------------------------------

Nakamaru watched Ueda's photo shoot, a look of concern flashing across his handsome features as he saw the looks he was being given. It looked almost like a plea, but for what, he couldn't really tell. It bothered him every time he heard the photographers tell Ueda to do something about his lips, not that there was anything wrong with them how they were. They were as vital to Ueda as his brain or his heart; part of what made him so attractive to everyone. Or at least that was how Nakamaru felt.

He'd always told Ueda that he was cool enough just how he was, and hoped that Ueda believed it, but knowing his friend's self-confidence, he doubted it. Maybe if he told him enough times, Ueda would believe him. Nakamaru's mind flashed back to at least once that he could recall telling Ueda how he felt.

"Ueda kakkoii desu!"

It seemed so long ago that he'd said those words, but in reality, it was probably nothing more than a few days or a week at the most since he'd last said it. Not that he didn't mean it with each time he spoke; he just felt the need to remind Ueda on a constant basis that he was fine just the way he was.

After watching the photographer tell Ueda yet again to tuck in his lips to make them a little less fuller, Nakamaru'd had enough. He found himself striding towards Ueda, then turning around with his arms outstretched, as if protecting Ueda from the photographer's unkind remarks.

"Please stop that," he told the photographer, his eyes flashing. "Ueda is Ueda! Ueda, untuck your lips."

This last was said over his shoulder, a soft, gentle smile meant for Ueda only as he felt the surprised young man's eyes boring into his back.

"It's okay, Ueda. Nobody will judge you any more."

Nakamaru could see the blush rising in Ueda's soft cheeks, the smile dimming as he saw the fake smile and heard him speak.

"It's okay. I don't mind!. Let's just finish!"

The words were said in a cheerful tone, but Nakamaru could tell that something was wrong and turned around to look at his friend.

"Ued...." he started to say, but was cut off.

"It's okay, I said," Ueda said, his smile saying one thing, his actions quite another.

Taking a careful step towards Ueda, Nakamaru could only stare in shock as he saw tears shining from behind the thick glasses his friend was wearing, his eyes downcast. Without warning Ueda bowed in his direction. Something was clearly wrong.

"Sumimasen," Ueda cried out, then bolted from the room, leaving everyone else looking at each other in surprise and amazement.

Something was definitely wrong. This wasn't like Ueda at all and Nakamaru was determined to go after him and find out what was the matter. Just as he got outside, he heard his name whimpered out softly from somewhere along the deep green-painted hallway. Was Ueda crying?

Confirmation came in the small sounds of crying, growing louder as he approached and found his dearest friend, crouched down against the wall, holding himself and sobbing as if his heart were breaking. Tears shone on Ueda's face, breaking Nakamaru's heart as he knelt down and took Ueda gently into his arms as if to protect him from all the unkind words and actions of the world around them.

He smiled as he felt Ueda's hand on his arm, his face pressed against his shoulder, and began to stroke Ueda's soft, brown hair with gentle fingers. Hearing a sob, Nakamaru brought his head down to Ueda's and spoke softly into his ear, feeling the shiver that coursed through Ueda.

"Ueda....gomen..."

Nakamaru didn't know if the simple words would have any effect, but feeling Ueda's arms slowly glide to around his waist, the hands that clutched at his jacket, he felt somewhat better. Things would be all right in the end, he could feel it. Moments later the sobbing quietened, then stopped altogether and Nakamaru finally felt it was the right time to give his friend a little breathing space. He didn't pull away completely; merely just enough, his forehead resting against Ueda's.

Suddenly Nakamaru saw those beautiful eyes open and look at him over those unbelievably adorable glasses, the thick frames somehow suiting him more than he thought possible. Ueda's soft brown eyes looked at him, seemingly down into his soul and catching him by surprise; so much so that when the glasses touched his nose awkwardly, then soft lips met his, he could only kneel there in amazement, feeling the soft, gentle breathing of his friend as the kiss was abruptly terminated.

He knelt there for what felt like eternity, Ueda's head bowing in what seemed like an apology. What was there to apologise for, Nakamaru wondered. A smile crossed Nakamaru's features as he reached out and carefully removed the offending spectacles, Ueda's eyes snapping open in shock as he realised what Nakamaru was doing.

Leaning forward, his hands gentle on Ueda's hips, Nakamaru pressed his lips to Ueda's, feeling the softness; the gentle kiss sending his senses reeling. Finally pulling away, Nakamaru smiled, this time to show he meant what he'd done. It wasn't a fluke - a sympathetic gesture meant only to calm his distraught friend.

At the end of it, it seemed that all that came to him then was a corny line that seemed to amuse Ueda even as he said it in all seriousness.

"I guess it's harder to kiss with glasses on, eh?"

Rewarded with a small smile and a chuckle, Nakamaru knew he'd never have it any other way. He'd always be there, to protect and to care for Ueda, and vice versa. It was just meant to be that way - Ueda and Nakamaru - U + N.
