I've sensed a rather large and sudden surge of people with magical abilities. I must say, I am intrigued, and would like to warn you about something ( Read more... )

Why should we believe you over them?

Because the things they are accusing me are just... just... Oh, I can't bring myself to think of it... they accuse me of killing my best friend! Betraying the man who raised me as his own son! But I know they are all good people, and wish no harm to come to them...

Maybe it's the truth.

I can assure you it is not! Or at least that someone else has been masquerading as myself to frame me for such horrific crimes!

That sort of thing is not uncommon in my world. In fact, it was part of my duties as High Court Mage to act as the Emperor's body double from time to time, and I'm sure that there are those that envy my place at the Emperor's right hand...

I'd think someone would have noticed that.

If the person is not attuned to the magical leylines, it would be impossible to tell the difference.

You're the first 'Mage-Knight'. Who else would be able to use magical concealment?

First, but not last.

How many are there, then?

Hmm... around thirty or so. And the infusion process did effect the minds of a couple of them, unfortunately... but they volunteered for the placement, and served their Empire valiantly.

Affected their minds how?

The procedure is rather painful, unfortunately... the powdered Magicite is suspended in Ether, and then injected into the subject's eyes. Unfortunately, that is the only site that does carries the Magicite to the mind quickly enough to have the desired effect.

There were a couple of cases where the anesthetic wore off too soon, and the pain drove them mad, and another where the sudden influx of power proved to be too taxing on their psyche, and they lost their grip on reality, sadly enough.

Come to think of it... general Chere was one of the first Mage-Knights as well... perhaps the toll is finally showing... and perhaps I can still help her...

And I'm guessing you were one of the lucky ones?

It appears so, unfortunately... I do hope that the effects are treatable...

This isn't your world. I don't know if you could find the right sort of things.
