I didn't say you were subjects, but if you were, data can be manipulated, as long as the independent variables are declared, with separation between the control and variable groups.
My definition of observation is just different from that which you are familiar with.

Data and fact are two separate things. Data is simply interpretation of fact. Interference changes fact. Alters perceptions, yes, but not the concrete.
Then again, not even the concrete is much more than fluid in some cases.

Sometimes it's necessary to manipulate variables to clearly establish correlation.
