Well, as some of you may have heard, we will NOT be going to Crystal Ball this weekend.
troll_boy has been having problems with his back for the last month or so (bulging disk). He went through some (rather useless) physical therapy, has been on anti-inflamatories, and has been sleeping on the floor, all so that he could get his back into better condition, and be able to fight this weekend. Well, today on his way to take the dog to the doggy spa for the weekend, a car pulled out in front of him, forcing him to slam on his breaks, slamming the 80lb dog into the back of his seat (Winston's fine). This caused his back to start spasming severly. By the time he got home, I couldn't even *lightly* touch the skin on his back, because it hurt too much. We headed over to see the doctor (same one he saw last time), who confirmed that it is with 90-99% certainty, a bulging disk. The doc thinks that the injury has built up over time, most likely from the repetitive motion of fighting (swinging blows cause the body to twist and lift at the same time) without proper core-stablizing muscle strength. (We did not tell the doctor about
troll_boy ending up on his stomach at Pennsic during the fort battle, with an easterner on top of him). Basically the doc said that these things happen over time, and then are aggravated by something small, like sleeping wrong, that makes it swell and become difficult.
So, at this point
troll_boy has three choices- do nothing, treat it aggressively with cortisone injections, or go back to PT, and be more diligent in his exercises and staying on his anti-inflamatory drug religiously. At this point, he is opting for the last option, and returns to PT on Tuesday. He also has an appointment to see a Physiatrist in the middle of December for further consultation on what to do, should he need it.
Needless to say, we won't be making the trek down to the event- the car trip alone would kill him, I think :( So,those of you who are going, have fun and hit someone for us, k? Thanks.
