Proposal name (and playwright): [The Tragical History of] Doctor Faustus
by Christopher Marlowe, 1604.
Explain to us a bit what you are proposing: A stage production of the tragedy of Doctor Faustus; a chemist who forfeits his soul for material and temporal gains in a pact with, very clever and comedic, Mephistopheles. It was written in the (assumed) late sixteenth century, and is a variation of the legend of Faust. A few themes within this play include (i) divinity versus agnosticism (ii) hubris versus humility (iii) infinite versus finite (iv) magic versus knowledge and (v) damnation versus salvation. It is a play in five acts and thirteen scenes (the fifth act is very short, so it almost counts as four).
Why do you think this will be good for you as a (director)? This play will be a great challenge. It emphasizes an exceptionally profound moral dilemma which is relatable to any reader. This play is so cool to get into. There is potential to sympathize with Faustus, to ridicule Faustus, to fear him. It is one of my favorite plays. To, collectively, make it a production will require an explicit attention to detail. Although it is very meaningful, unsettling, and frightening, a good sense of humor will keep this boat afloat. This play is so great! The Seven Deadly Sins make an appearance! It would be wonderful for everyone involved because, I think, it would be a privilege to have the opportunity to bring Faustus to life.
Why do you think this would be good for the King's community? To follow tradition, having a play performed from the FYP reading list is always a bonus. Although it is not on this years FYP list, it is still an integral part of understanding the year - as an introduction to the Faust legend and infinitude/finitude, as a glimpse into the Reformation era, and as its status of being an awesome piece of literature. It would also appeal to many HOST students, because it is somewhat science-central, and also suggested for production by Dr. McOuat.
(I HOPE THIS HAPPENS!!!! ARI-PAUL AND I WILL RULE THE SHOW!!
I'll let you know more, when we know more, if you'd like to see it)
